This category of stouts will not include imperial/barrel aged/pastry/adjunct except coffee! Those will be broken down into another category down the road! Thanks to everyone who has participated in the voting and to the brewer’s making the beer! Cheers!
Stout is a dark, top-fermented beer with a number of variations, including dry stout, oatmeal stout, milk stout. The first known use of the word stout for beer was in a document dated 1677 found in the Egerton Manuscripts, the sense being that a “stout beer” was a strong beer, not a dark beer.
From BA: NEIPA is essentially an unfiltered IPA or Double IPA that’s been aggressively hopped. Appearance ranges from slightly hazy or cloudy to opaque or muddy. Dry-hopping, the use of high-protein grains (flours, flaked oats, wheat), certain yeast strains, water chemistry, CO2 levels, and other techniques may also contribute to the beer’s haze and mouthfeel. But the overall goal is typically a hazy, juicy IPA packed with fruity and floral flavors
I’m a little late to the party on this event, but get your tickets to this years Big Grove “Oktoberfest”! The Iowa City location will be hosting this event, below are the details and the only thing I see missing from the event is a good old fashioned “slap off”! Chad Young v. Kent Ball anyone?
Here are the details:

The chefs and brewers of Big Grove are coming together for a one-night-only, German beer dinner in Iowa City Throughout this five-course meal, prepared by our award-winning chefs, we’ll celebrate our very own Oktoberfest with socially distant games and good times. Some exciting news from Big Grove Brewery this week as they plan to release their hazy double ipa “Starla” in cans this weekend. Showcasing citra and Idaho 7 hops, the first release of “Starla” clocked in at 6.4%, not sure if the 2nd run will be the same or not. Along with “Starla” Big Grove has also released “All New Everything” double IPA in cans.
Big Adventure
A busy week for BG for sure and to top it off, their collab with Adventurous Brewing, “Big Adventure” hazy double IPA and “Northside” Helles Lager will be featured in Northside Oktoberfest in a box. So, if you got in on the Northside release you’re getting what are sure to be some tasty brews! The weekend approaches and cold beer will be welcomed! Support your local breweries, bars, and restaurants! Cheers!
If you find yourself in or around the lovely town of Dewitt, Iowa on November 7th, drive on over to Murphy’s Pub and sip on some delicious Big Grove Brewery Richard the Whale! That’s not all that will be on tap: Color TV and Turtle Hunter will also be there to wet your whistle! Here’s more courtesy of Murphy’s Pub:
Join us as we tap our first ever keg of Richard the Whale from Iowa’s own Big Grove Brewery! This Russian Imperial Stout is Bourbon Barrel Aged and comes in at 11.5% ABV. This particular keg is the 2019 Richard aged for about 11 months.
We will also be tapping Big Grove’s Turtle Hunter & Color TV! No carry-out / no growlers. More details to come.
A brewery that is as good as any with their releases and celebrations has announced their Solon location’s 7th anniversary details! Food, beer, and socially distant fun will be had, this lineup includes some new beers and a the chefs will be doing up some smoked pork shoulder tacos. Here’s more on the anniversary party:
Join us Sunday in Solon to celebrate our 7th Anniversary! This year will look a little different from past anniversary parties—as we add a bit of socially-distant fun and subtract a few pieces from previous years that aren’t a fit in 2020.
Most importantly… here’s the tap lineup:
• Barrel Aged Velvet
• Color TV
• Batch 1000
• Turtle Hunter
• Solon Summer Series Peach Pecan Pie
• Stouted Nut Roll 🆕
We’ll be taking over the street in front of our brewpub to expand patio seating—and all guests must be seated by a host and remain at their table while dining. Face coverings are encouraged.
A specialty Big Grove-themed coloring book will be available for the kids. And we’ve added a from-your-table scavenger hunt with prizes. No chalk contest this year, unfortunately.
Our chefs will be doing a smoked pork shoulder taco special and the bakers are whipping up Sweet Corn Cheesecake and cupcakes! Our fabulous service staff brings the goods to your table.
We’ll have live music from 12-6, made up of former and current staff members.
We’re grateful to be celebrating a seventh anniversary. Back in 2013, we weren’t sure if we’d even have a one-year anniversary—and it’s been a fun ride every day since. This year’s been a doozy—but we believe we can celebrate responsibly. We’d be honored if you could join us.
As in year’s past, we will be open on Labor Day Monday 👍
Big news from Big Grove Brewery last night as they subtly announced the release date for Richard the Whale for December 5th! It was a sneak peek at a Richard sampling so as of now, no details on the process release were given, but stay tuned for more information on that as that date approaches! Here’s what BG had to say courtesy of their Facebook page:
Pulled a sample of Richard the Whale 2020 today from this Buffalo Trace bourbon barrel. Annnnd can bet the beer is fire 🔥 But you may not know the barrel (and more specifically the nail we used to pierce the barrel) was on fire to keep the process sanitary. 😏 Oh and save the date for Saturday, December 5 for the release of our favorite barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout 🐳
Reds Alehouse in North Liberty will be hosting a barrel aged breakfast featuring Big Grove Breweries barrel-aged Velvet! Tickets will go on sale next Monday, August 10th and more details of this event will be released then as well! For more, check out Reds’ Facebook page by clicking here!
