abu.jpeg

Another big drop from Abu Nawas will be coming next week and along with this drop is the debut in Iowa of Public Access Brewing. Here’s more on this brewery:

The story behind Public Access starts with a little bar in Greenpoint Brooklyn you may have heard of called Tørst. Since the day it opened in spring of 2013, Tørst has been a haven for beer nerds all over the world. It has also managed to produce some serious brewing talent. Guys like Joey Pepper from Folksbier and Anthony Sorice from Root + Branch, got their start bartending at Tørst and have since moved on to make some of the highest rated, most sought-after beer on the East Coast. Another of those Tørst talents – specifically Ramon Manuel Manrique Hung. The story of the superb new Public Access Brewing is the story of Venezuelan native Ramón Manrique, who was living in Belgium when he became enchanted by the variety and traditions of Belgian beer. His passion for craft beer led him to positions at world-renowned beer destinations Tørst & Proletariat,  We could not be more psyched to start bringing his Public Access beers to you. Their first release is on deck for this month…

Brouwerij Drie Fonteinen announcement from Abu Nawas! Last call before 2022!

A major Lambic Announcement coming from Abu Nawas and Brouwerij Drie Fonteinen as the brewery is allowing Abu Nawas to ship directly. Shipment is planned for later this year, arriving in September, and it’s the last time we’ll see lambic from them before 2022, because of the very high demand they are experiencing both in Europe and the Far East. We know it is hard to think about the holidays in June but think about ordering accordingly as this would be a great offering for the Holiday Season.

The only limit that might have to be imposed would be on the Oude Kriek. No Limit on the Gueze front. There are also awesome looking MAGNUMS available to us.Please let Abu Nawas know as soon as you can! They have to get this back to our Drie Fonteinen by 7 PM Brussels time on Friday. So they are setting a deadline for noon our time on Friday!

CLARIFICATION: We Appreciate the tremendous amount of request and inquiries so we thought this clarification was due. ABU NAWAS BEVERAGE as a wholesaler is prohibited from selling to the public. As such, you will need to talk to your favorite Retailer/License Holder so they can place an order, as we cannot sell directly to end consumer/public. Thank you all!

La Vecina opening this week! Soft opening review!

The newest venture from Sam Hall, owner/operator of Marquee Pizza and Clinton Street Social Club, is set to open its doors this coming week. La Vecina, located in the popular Iowa River Landing district, is going to be opening their doors this coming Wednesday to the public. Hours are going to limited in the first couple of weeks so stay tuned to their Facebook page for updates. Check it out here:

I was lucky enough to attend their soft opening on Friday night. When asked to describe the cuisine, the easy answer is Mexican food, which in most regards can get my ass to that place, but this is a bit more than that..maybe a lot more than that. I’ve never been to San Diego but for some reason this cuisine put me on a beach in Southern California; the freshness, open fire grill, and ambiance of the restaurant make it hard for you not to be California dreaming. Sam and staff had to have done their research…the technique, the flavors, the freshness and the care put into every dish were exactly what you’d expect from a west coast “mexican” restaurant. Enough of my jabber, let’s look at the dishes:

STARTERS

The guac: It’s hard to mess up guac, but it’s easy to overdo it as well and La Vecina makes the best guac I’ve ever had. The thing everyone needs to realize is that the chips/tortillas are freshly made. Not just pressed, but the corn is ground there, pressed, and then made into tortillas/chips. Crunch rim, soft and chewy middle. Load those suckers up with guac, or pic #2 is a shrimp ceviche that I would walk through broken glass to get to.
Pic #3 is octopus. Don’t be scared folks, it’s amazing. The sauce that completes the char on the octopus compliments it perfectly. Soft and tender and refreshing dish. On to the queso fundido…my recommendation…just order this dish…you may want two…cheesey and amazing and served with fresh tortillas, cilantro and pickled onions which complement it perfectly. You can’t go wrong with the starters here.

TACOS

I missed a few pics but I tried the four tacos on the menu. You get three to an order and you are wanting more and more…

*Carnitas – you really can’t go wrong. Tender meat, fresh veggies, and a perfect complement of salsas.

*Fried Avocado Tacos – the surprise of the night. Crispness from the avocado with a chewy interior mixed with the fresh veggies and sauce…yes..I would eat a million of these bad boys.

*Fish Tacos – a huge chunk of white fish. Flaky, delicious and that spice from the salsa makes you happy you have drink next to you. Wonderful fish taco.

*Brisket Tacos – the meat was as tender as you’d expect. The beauty was the guava bbq.

It wouldn’t be hard to put 3 of each taco down during a sitting. Everyone had a something unique about them but everyone was delicious. Share with someone, order all 4 and share. Worth it.

DRINKS

I don’t know shit about cocktails, but I tried everyone on the menu. Watermelon, jalapeno, basil, bell pepper…a mix huge mix of ingredients with the finest booze around and you can’t go wrong when pairing with a taco or ten. Plus, Big Grove has El Lenador on tap..a craft spin on a Mexican lager which was a perfect pairing to everything.

I can’t say enough about how great this place is going to be. Our waitress was beyond terrific and each dish was unique, fresh, and exactly what makes it stand apart and should make you want to get to La Vecina. Sam, Staff, Chefs…keep rolling…this is EXACTLY what the area needs. Cheers!

Abu Nawas drops this week: More Hubbard’s Cave and Une Annee

une annee

I’m not sure what everyone else things but Abu Nawas getting us Hubbard’s Cave beers to our market sure has been a treat! Love what these guys are doing and look forward to trying everything they release. Here’s what’s coming down the line this week from Abu Nawas:

  • Hubbard’s Cave: Fresh IIPA V5 (Citra, Mosaic) 16oz CANS – While these tropical fruit bomb hops need no further description, we’d also like to note that in addition to the subtle changes to the malt bill/brew process to amplify body/sweetness we made beginning with last week’s release (V29), this is the first batch trying a different yeast strain from what we’ve been using. We won’t spoil all the surprises but just want to say we think everyone will be pleased with the results.
  • Hubbard’s Cave: Fresh IIPA V30 (Chinook, Idaho 7, Simcoe) 16oz CANS – This one is another new addition to the V series, Fresh IIPA V30, but keeping with the updated malt base and yeast profile beginning with V5. Chinook and Idaho 7 in the boil (or whirlpool, rather) give this one a nice piney and lightly bitter backbone, then a bit of each along with a large charge of Simcoe in the dry-hop drives this home while also yielding a beautiful bouquet of tropical fruit.
  • Hubbard’s Cave: Coco Van  16oz CANS –  From the Brewery: “Last time we made this beer we added more coconut than we’ve ever used and our backs paid the price when it came time to dig out the fermenter. This time we said backs be damned and added even more! We’re left with a thick and decadent coconut bomb of an imperial stout that goes down far too smooth for 12%.” ***Very Limited***
  • Hubbard’s Cave: Mocha Pot de Crème16oz CANS   –From the Brewery: “This is a brand new addition to the PdC series! We were, as always, excited to team up with our friends Brian and Josh at Abacus Coffee Roasters for our coffee addition on this beer. When we told them we wanted something to pair with a thick and chocolatey lactose stout, they came back with El Salvador Red Honey Bourbon, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. Smooth, creamy, and bursting with coffee, this one lives up to its name.  ***Very Limited***
  • Une Annee: Framboise 16oz CANS –  American Wild Ale Fermented with Raspberries. 6.5% ABV ***Now in a Snazzy 2 Pack CANS***
  • Une Année Le Seul XXVI (Boysenberry)24-CANS – 2pk16oz –  Another in our Le Seul series makes its debut in cans! We’ve continued blending bits of our Brett culture into each batch of Le Seul to reduce acidity and add a little complexity, but that hasn’t stopped us from adding copious amounts of fruit to them! This batch saw a heaping addition of Boysenberries yielding a mild bitterness and strong aromas/flavors of sweet, jammy fruit.  ***Now in a Snazzy 2 Pack CANS***
  • Une Année Le Seul XXVIII (Tangerine)24-CANS – 2pk16oz   –  We have a new member of the Le Seul family with LS XXVIII (Tangerine). Falling in line with our other recent Le Seul releases, this one has a subtle tartness and a light Brett profile, with a luscious Tangerine aroma which brings Sunny D and daydreams of playing outside to mind. A springtime crusher!     ***Now in a Snazzy 2 Pack CANS***

Abu Nawas Drops for this week! Hubbard Cave/Une Annee

Another drop of terrific brews coming from Abu Nawas as Hubbard’s Cave and Une Annee will be getting some more of their great beers to us next week. Here’s what’s coming:

une1.jpeg

  • Le Seul XXIV (Plum) 24-CANS – 2pk16oz – American Wild Ale Fermented with Plums. 6.5% ABV. From The Brewery: “This beer is being released for just the second time ever and for the first time in cans! With this batch we’ve continued blending bits of our Brett culture into our original mixed-culture base, allowing more of its character to shine and also resulting in a more restrained acidity. We also threw so much plum purée at this one that even our centrifuge couldn’t get it clear! The result is a complex and refined, yet easy-drinking crusher fruit bomb of a sour beer.”
  • Hubbard’s Cave: Fresh IIPA V28 (Ariana, Jarrylo, Pekko) 24-CANS – 4pk16oz – Fresh IIPA. 8.5% ABV. From The Brewery: “We were feeling a little poetic in crafting this one, paying homage to springtime with Jarrylo being named after the Slavic God of fertility and Pekko named after the Finnish God of farming. The result is a lightly tropical, herbal and earthy IIPA that hits the mouth soft and sweet, but finishes dry and crisp with a light bitterness…keeping in tradition with our hoppy beers landing square between the coasts’ respective styles.”
  • Hubbard’s Cave: Fresh IIPA V29 (Falconer’s Flight, Michigan Copper) 24-CANS – 4pk16oz – Fresh IIPA. 8.5% ABV. From The Brewery: “This batch saw a few tweaks to the brew process resulting in a moderate increase in sweetness, more amplified body, and a smoother bitterness. [read: more juicy] Playing with the new base profile, we’ve got floral and citrus character from the Falconer’s Flight while Michigan Copper is more known for its fruit punch and cherry candy-like flavors, with both imparting notes of pine resin.” 8.5% ABV.
Treats in 750ml Bottles:
  • Hubbard’s Cave: Bananas Foster 12-750ml Bottles – Imperial Stout with Cinnamon, Maple Syrup, Vanilla and Bananas. 12% ABV.
  • Hubbard’s Cave: Coffee and Cakes 12-750ml Bottles – Imperial Stout Brewed with Coffee from Chicago ABACUS Coffee and Maple Syrup. 12% ABV.

freethought.png

Another new brewery will be making their way into the Iowa market as Freethought brewing will be brought to us by Abu Nawas. More from Abu on this brewery:

This month we proudly introduce a brand new gypsy-brewing outfit that we’ve been working behind the scenes with for some time now, and which is finally ready to see the light of day…FREETHOUGHT. Central to this aim, is an extreme focus on ingredients. With a strong culinary background at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, the pair have spent years studying the provenance and seasonality of ingredients, in addition to the heightened expression of flavor that comes from marrying just the right elements at just the right time of year. The beers of FREETHOUGHT take ingredient combination and selection to an entirely different level than anyone we’ve seen before, and we are certain that these guys are about to get seriously noticed.
