Lion Bridge releasing Oktobott 3000 and Beer at Work tomorrow! (9/1)

Lion Bridge Brewing is ringing in the month of September with the release of two beers. Oktobott 3000 and Beer at Work will be ready for you when the taproom opens Sept. 1st @ 3:00 p.m. Here’s more on these two brews below:

Oktobot 3000 (Barrel-Aged Imperial Märzen, 8.5%abv) – A fusion brew with German and Czech roots in the recipe as well as the name (“robot” is a word with Czech origins). Munich and Bohemian Pilsner Malt are the motherboard to this amped up version of the style, while 7 months in Willett Rye Whiskey barrels greases the cogs and makes sure it all computes.

Beer at Work (Australian-style IPA, 7.0%abv) – Heavily dry-hopped with Australian Vic Secret and a touch of New Zealand Motueka, this beer exhibits strong tropical fruit flavors known to come from the land down under where women glow and men plunder.

Cascade Brewing coming to Iowa via Pequod! Plus Ology, Blackstack, MORE, and Modist!

You will soon be able to buy Cascade Brewing beers in Iowa as they’re joining Pequod’s ever expanding distribution list! More on Cascade and a ton of other brews hitting our shelves from Pequod!

Iowa Eats: MIX Sushi; Cedar Rapids, IA

The beautiful thing about getting a particular craving when you live in between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City is that you can simply hop in your car and head towards either destination and places in between and satisfy that craving with one of the many amazing, locally owned restaurants/bars/breweries/pubs!

Sushi is definitely a craving I have often. There are a few very good sushi options in the IC/CR area and after reading and seeing many posts about this place, I finally made it to MIX sushi in downtown Cedar Rapids! MIX (210 3rd Avenue, Cedar Rapids) not only serves up some of the best sushi I’ve had, but also has options for the vegetarian and gluten free crowd!

I usually go overboard on ordering when I visit a new place and I did the same visiting MIX. I started off with the the “Angry Shrimp”. 3 jumbo shrimp stuffed with a sweet chilli jalapeno cream cheese blend, hand breaded and deep fried and served with some excellent sweet and sour sauce. This is also a gluten free option! The perfect start to the meal. Spicy, fresh, and delicious. It doesn’t need the sweet and sour because they are extremely flavorful but the sweet and sour is so good I doused mine in it! Would order again and on every single visit!

Next up – sushi time! Mix tuna roll – Spicy white tuna, cucumber, and avocado inside the roll with seared red tuna, mayo, spicy mayo, unagi sauce, and scallions on the outside. Refreshing, tasty, and just what I needed. A little dab of wasabi and I could hammer this roll all day long.

White Dragon Roll – Tempura battered and fried shrimp with cream cheese, cucumber inside and ebi shrimp, white tuna, honey mayo on the outside. The battered and fried shrimp give this roll and wonderful crunch and the honey mayo sweetness blends really well with a little tab of wasabi. Excellent roll!

Fire Dragon Roll – spicy tuna, cucumber inside. red tuna, red tobiko, spicy mayo outside. I didn’t think it was spicy as advertised but I really enjoyed this roll too. Refreshing, a bit spicy, and delicious and pairs perfectly with a cold Kirin Ichiban.

MIX is definitely worth visiting for the sushi crowd. Excellent service and wonderful food options. I would order the same things I ordered on my visit but I know I want to try it all! Check out MIX soon!

Iowa Eats: Ramen Belly; Iowa City, IA!

Start driving to Iowa City, take the Dubuque Street exit, come to the stop light before the Mayflower and hang a ralph, drive up and yes, it’s all houses/homes/condos/etc. keep going until you hit the Peninsula Neighborhood. Don’t worry, if you think you are totally missing a restaurant because it’s all houses, you would be correct, but just get to Martin Street and you’ll run into a legit restaurant…you’ve made it..1010 Martin Street in Iowa City….get your taste buds ready for Ramen Belly!

Nestled back in a beautiful Iowa City neighborhood is where you can get an extremely satisfying and fulfilling Asian meal. Ramen Belly has a small seating capacity with some outdoor tables which makes it charming and hospitable as do the wait staff and owners. You are given menus, but you place your order after scanning a QR code and the staff are eager to help if need be. The menu itself is mouth-water….potstickers, short ribs, poke bowls, and what I came there to eat…RAMEN!!! When I hit a new place and the menu has many options that appease they eye, it’s time to order a shit load of food! Before the food…the beer…….Ichiban on tap…get one, Japan’s pale ale, or get a Sapporo while you’re feeding your face. For the Iowa Craft scene, Easy Eddy was on the lines!

DISH 1 – Braised Pork and Mushroom Pot Stickers:

Potstickers are always an easy thing to order because they are usually extremely tasty if done correctly, and Ramen Belly does them extremely well. A bit of crunch on the outside, steamed perfectly, and the mushroom/roasted pork combo paired wonderfully. Definitely worth another order.

DISH 2 – Tuna Tartare

Fresh tuna tossed in a sriracha aioli with house pickled cucumbers, wonton strips, and thin strips of nori. Refreshing with a little punch of heat from the aioli, paired perfectly with a cold Ichiban.

DISH 3 – Poke Bowl

Yes, this dish and the one above look similar. Underneath this one however is some delicious white rice and a sesame flavored seaweed salad to go along with the mouth watering tuna. Refreshing, filling, and extremely tasty. The seaweed salad is the game changer in this dish. Those house cucumbers in there make for a perfect bite!

DISH 4 – RAMEN!!!

I went with the house blend ramen broth on this one and after talking to the owner you can appreciate it all those flavors that you get from it. The broth is cooked down for 36 hours before blending with others broths for at least an additional 18 hours. Packed full of flavor for all the lovely parts of chicken, pork, veggies, beef and then strained over al dente noodles, a big slab of the best tasting korean grilled short rib I’ll ever eat, soft boiled egg, and bean sprouts.

OVERALL

I want to go back tomorrow. Every dish was delicious, flavorful, and well-executed. My one regret…I should have ordered a bunch of short ribs! I will not make that mistake again! Forget chicken noodle soup, Ramen is the way to go! Check out Ramen Belly on Facebook by clicking HERE and get over there and get some awesome food!

Big Grove unveils plans for Des Moines location in Summer 2022!

Des Moines PR Announcement 2021

Media Contact: Janelle Buxton, Big Grove Brewery, (970) 342-3545, marketing@biggrovebrewery.com

Big Grove Brewery proposed to open summer 2022 in Des Moines

[Iowa City, IA]: Big Grove Brewery is honored to announce its newest brewery and taproom location scheduled to open in Des Moines in 2022. Plans for the 15-barrel brewery and taproom are proposed to be located on the eastern side of the Crescent Chevrolet Building as part of the Ingersoll corridor project.

This milestone is a major move for Big Grove Brewery. “For me, it was crazy because I came back to Iowa eight years ago to complete our dream of opening a location in Solon. For the longest time, we didn’t think anything past that. I’m thrilled by our growth and bringing the magic of Big Grove to Des Moines. It is a perfect next step,” says Doug Goettsch, co-owner of Big Grove.

Big Grove looks forward to contributing to an already successful and growing craft beer scene in Des Moines, while furthering efforts to make the state of Iowa a craft beer destination. “In Des Moines, we plan to cover a full range of beer styles, from barrel aged sours to hazy double IPAs and everything in between,” said Head Brewer Andy Joynt. “Quality and freshness are important to us, so it’s great to get people closer to the source.”

Much like the different ranges in beer, distinct types of cuisines will be offered, “Our chefs are developing a vibrant menu ranging from traditional and approachable brewery fare to global street food, as well as vegan and gluten-friendly options,” said Big Grove Culinary Director and 2018 Iowa Restaurateur of the Year, Benjamin Smart.

For service-style, Big Grove is looking to do a hybrid model. There will be a large full service section, but if you choose to, you can sit in a self service section which “allows flexibility for bigger parties and people to get up and mingle and just have a different experience that doesn’t confine them to their table,” said Smart. A heavy emphasis will be placed on the experience, especially for families. “Families come and feel welcome, and kids have a place to come around and play while parents gather.” commented Goettsch.

Krause+ will be overseeing the building of Big Grove Des Moines and the redevelopment of 5.5 acres including the Crescent block on the north side of Ingersoll Avenue, which aims to eventually connect pedestrian and bicycle traffic. According to Jerry Haberman, President of Krause+, “We have always envisioned the “Crescent block” to include an ‘eatertainment’ venue consisting of music, food, and a brewery. This is a successful Iowa brewing scene — Des Moines is becoming a destination for craft beer and brewing.”

The brewery plans to move forward with the same humble spirit, appreciating the process of architectural revitalization. “At the heart of Big Grove is a goal of fostering the community around us and being environmentally responsible while we do it,” says CEO of Big Grove Matthew Swift. “These efforts are rewarded with our current Green Platinum Brewery certification and being a good neighbor to the craft beer community and our guests.”

Big Grove Des Moines plans to hire guest services, kitchen, and brewery staff. “One thing for anyone involved in Big Grove, is the ability for staff to take care of themselves. We want them to be the best versions of themselves and we encourage them to take care of their family and friends as well and from there to take care of the guests and the community at Big Grove,” added Danny Standley, Big Grove managing partner.

This announcement comes in the wake of many recent award-winning accomplishments of the brewery, finding success with Easy Eddy Hazy IPA, the fastest-growing IPA brand in Iowa. Later this summer, Big Grove plans to launch Squeeze Hard Seltzer, inviting another set of drinkers, including gluten-free audiences, to join the Big Grove experience.

With the announcement of Big Grove Des Moines, the company plans to open a brewery location in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 2023, focusing on lagerhaus and open-fermentation concepts. Cedar Rapids is part of a broader economic development plan in the downtown area.

About the Company: Big Grove is among the top craft beer producers in Iowa and ranks in the top 3% for barrel production nationally. According to 2019 data from the national Brewers Association, Iowa ranks 26th for craft beer production and is home to 107 breweries. In 2013, the brewery got its start as a 3.5-barrel brewhouse in Solon, Iowa and focused on freshly made craft beer and elevated pub cuisine. Four years later, the brewery opened a 28,000 square foot production facility, serving as an anchor for the Iowa City Riverfront Crossings redevelopment project. Big Grove has received multiple craft brewing medals including a gold medal for Easy Eddy Hazy IPA.
