Your favorite beer festival returns this fall! Join us as we take over the streets of the Northside on Saturday, September 23rd. This year, Northside Oktoberfest celebrates 27 years and will include Iowa City BrewFest, your beloved sampling event, and bring back the Outdoor Bier Hall. Northside Oktoberfest is made possible thanks to the 2023 sponsors: Fly CID, ImOn Communications, John’s Grocery, Little Village, Pagliai’s Pizza, and Phelan Tucker Law LLP.

Iowa City BrewFest, sponsored by Fly CID, will remain exclusive with only 700 tickets available. Less than half of the tickets remain, so get yours now before it’s too late! Although the festival is open for anyone to walk through, only those with an official BrewFest glass will be able to sample beer and wine from vendors.

The Outdoor Bier Hall is the General Admission to Northside Oktoberfest. Attendees can purchase a Bier Hall mug that allows them to purchase beer and wine at Northside businesses. Only those with this mug will be able to enjoy beer and wine in the streets. Mugs are available for pre-sale now for only  $10 and will increase to $15 the day-of. The festival is open for anyone to enjoy live music and traditional Oktoberfest games and contests.

Our expert adjunctologists unleashed the FlavorBot 9000 and dialed in that tart, sweet, fluffy Lemon Meringue Pie flavor with precisely the right amount of Sicilian Lemon, Pear, Cream of Coconut, Vanilla Soft Serve, Granola, Brown Sugar, Lactose and Vanilla. Oats, flaked barley, and spelt lay down a foundation of thiol potential then we mash hopped with Hallertau Blanc and Belma to pack those thiols to the max and let the Cosmic Punch yeast go to work. Finally we dry hopped it with more Hallertau Blanc, Belma, and our hand-selected Citra. Benevolent Intentions is full of kiwi, peach, and bubble gum flavors with a crazy juicy sweetness that finishes crisp, clean and is scientifically delicious

Demon Spawn is a Double Hazy NEIPA with Mosaic, Mosaic Lupomax, Southern Cross, Lotus, and Exp ID-158. Fermented warm to unlock fruity esters. Double dry-hopped in active fermentation to allow bio-transformation to occur; unlocking huge bold flavors and aromas. Hop additions were pushed to the absolute limit. Normal hop quantities were doubled both in the whirlpool and cold side. Vicious mouthfeel, intense tropical flavors, and a smooth 8%. This one was spawned from the devil!

Drink This! Field Day Brewing”No Powertools” double IPA!

Iowa’s newest brewery has their first week under their belt, and I’m assuming it was a very busy week for the folks at Field Day Brewing. I was able to visit a few times and walked away completely impressed both times, not only by the beauty and layout of the building, the friendliness of the staff, but of course the food and the beer. Most breweries you like to give a cushion to as far as to when their beer will be completely dialed in, seems Field Day skipped this step and jumped right into pushing out some truly tasty beers. I love seeing different styles represented on their beer list.

On my second visit to Field Day I noticed a new double IPA on tap so naturally I gravitate towards that. “No Powertools” aroma hits you right when the beer is set in front of you. Citrus rind right in your face. The mouthfeel was velvety and creamy, excellent stuff. Double dry hopped and the Mosaic shines in this beer. Tempting, very tempting to order another, and I wish I would have as I don’t know how long this beer will last on tap or even if they are going to make anymore, but this is an IPA that I would drive back for anytime. Do yourself a favor, get to North Liberty, go and support Field Day, order some delicious food, try their terrific beers, but if you are lucky enough to see “No Powertools” on the taplist, you owe it to yourself to order it, to savor it, and Drink it!

JESTER KING CANS:

  • Jester King Le Petit Prince 6/4/16oz CANS – Jester King Famed Table Beer in CANS! 2.9% ABV – TX. Brewery Notes: “This feels a little surreal to write. It has certainly been a long-time coming. We first brewed Le Petit Prince Farmhouse Table Beer in 2012. We’ve been brewing it once or twice per year since. Originally inspired by Brasserie Dupont’s table beer called Avril. We sought to make a low-alcohol beer that’s dry, drinkable, refreshing, crisp, hoppy with a little bit of beguiling yeast character that only wild fermentation with native yeast can create. Le Petit Prince is probably our favorite beer we make. It’s certainly the truest to our core philosophy of beer making. After having people ask if we’d ever put it in cans for about a decade, we finally decided to. The recipe is well water from the Trinity Aquifer, Texas-grown malted barley and wheat, a blend of organic Perle and Fuggle hops from The Oregon Hophouse (both kettle and dry hops), and natural fermentation with native yeast. We always release it very fresh so the hop character is still vibrant. In this case, Le Petit Prince is a little younger and fresher than we normally release it, as the beer was force carbonated prior to canning, as opposed to our normal natural conditioning in bottles.”
  • Jester King Snorkel 6/4/16oz CANS – A Farmhouse Ale brewed with Alderwood Smoked Sea Salt and Oyster Mushrooms. 4.2% ABV – TX. Brewery Notes: “a farmhouse ale brewed with alderwood smoked sea salt and oyster mushrooms grown by our neighbor Logro Farms. Logro Farms is located just a few hundred yards from Jester King Brewery at Ceres Park Ranch. Snörkel takes partial inspiration from traditional German Gose. Like Gose, it’s moderate in alcohol, brewed with malted wheat and salt, and has some acidity or sourness in the flavor profile. We specifically used both sea salt and alderwood smoked sea salt, and fermented Snörkel (like all our beer) with a blend of brewers yeast, naturally occurring wild yeast, and native souring bacteria, the last of which lends the beer its acidity. But Gose only served as a jumping off point. From there, we set out to explore the savory characteristics of umami through use of the oyster mushrooms. A Cheese Lover pairing made in paradise”
  •  Jester King Mr Mingo 6/4/16oz CANS – A farmhouse ale with roselle hibiscus. The inspiration was to make a simple beer with a subtle adjunct. 4.8% ABV – TX. Brewery Notes: “Brewed with Trinity well water, TexMalt Llano pilsner and Denton County wheat, flaked oats, Columbus hops, and Roselle hibiscus. Fermented in stainless steel with our JK mixed culture. Packaged in kegs and (for the first time) cans. Light, dry, drinkable, mildly tart, and slightly herbaceous.”
  • Jester King Queen’s Order 6/4/16oz CANS – Farmhouse Ale with Tallow Honey and Dried Lemon Peel. 4% ABV – TX. Brewery Notes: “Queen’s Order is designed to be a nice, pillowy, low abv, dry and drinkable farmhouse ale with pleasant fruit-forward aromas and a nice quenching hop bitterness and fermentation tartness. It’s brewed with Trinity well water, TexMalt Llano Pilsner, malted spelt, flaked oats, organic Perle hops, dried lemon peel, and Tallow honey. It was fermented in stainless steel with our mixed culture and packaged in kegs and 16oz. cans.”
  • Jester King Cyber Thread DIPA 6/4/16oz CANS – Beautiful Double IPA for a worthy cause. It is brewed with Strata, Citra & Mosaic hops. 8.5% ABV – TX. Brewery Notes: “an international collaboration raising money for the Polaris Project, which works to fight human trafficking. The Double IPA recipe brewed with Strata, Citra & Mosaic hops was created in collaboration with Celestial Beerworks, Track, Horus, Bature, Long Live, Rey Arbol, Messorum, Oddity, and Spartacus.”
  • Jester King OG Black Metal 6/4/16oz CANS – Cult status Imperial Stout. 10.5% ABV – TX. Brewery Notes: “Black Metal, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. Blackened Death, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte, is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will. Best enjoyed while pumping out blast beats, summoning trolls, or enjoying a nice, leisurely reading of the Necronomicon. Brewed with Hill Country well water, Texas-grown pale malt, British caramel, brown, and chocolate malts, and Belgian candi sugar and fermented in with British yeast.”
  • Thiriez/Jester King La Petite Princesse 24x330ml – Tablebeer in collaboration with Jester King Craft Brewery. Clear and light pale ale, powerful character, an earthy bitterness with notes of bready yeast. 2.9% ABV – FR. Not a can but we loved this beer so much that we decided to bring a few more cases. A true classic, and a worthwhile side by side imbibing session! One Of Jeffrey Stuffing all time favorite collabs!
