Richard the Whale 2022

Wednesday, October 19 at 10am — Richard the Whale will go on sale for pre-order… then you can sip and sit back with our favorite barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout when he resurfaces on December 3 in our Iowa City, Solon, and Des Moines taprooms.

But it does beg the question… which variant styles should we pull from the oceans of options?? Chocolate Coconut Cake, Well Baked, and Coffee were reallllly tasty in 2021.

Wade Wisely and Greener State of Mind Returning

Wade Wisely and Greener State of Mind each return on Friday, September 30 with a mission to improve the quality of Iowa’s waterways!

Raise a glass of our annual Oatmeal Coffee Stout project with coffee from JBC Coffee Roasters and you’re benefiting The Driftless Flyathlon. And when you pick up our citrus-forward pale ale in collaboration with GreenState Credit Union, proceeds support the mission of Wings2Water

And after they hit the shelves of our breweries, they’ll both find their way across Iowa to your favorite beer coolers in the first week of October.

Coming to Shelves: 2 new Prairie Beers, Rogue Voodoo, Green Flash Tangerine Soul Style

prairie

There will be some new beers making their way to shelves in the coming weeks and months, 3 of which Iowa will see, and the two Prairie beers sound like they will make it up here but I haven’t confirmed that yet. Here’s more on these brews:

*Prairie! Flare – is a Gose with added citrus. More from Prairie on this beer:

First up, Prairie Flare!  Flare (yes, that’s how we are spelling it) is our gose that we have added citrus fruit to.  This beer is slightly tart, a little salty, and has a nice balance from the fruit and spices.  Look for this beer in 16.9oz bottles and on tap at your favorite pubs!

*Prairie Vanilla Noir – imperial stout aged in whiskey barrels and then the addition of vanilla beans. Here’s more:

Next on the list is one of our barrel aged beers, Vanilla Noir!  We have taken our imperial stout base and aged it in whiskey barrels for about half a year, then dosed it with vanilla beans.  I’m not sure there will be a better beer for the greatly anticipated cooler weather!

rogueRogue Voodoo Doughnut Mango Astronaut Ale – yep, that’s the name of this brew as they once again team up with Voodoo Doughnut. Here’s more on this one:

In this collision of crazies, Rogue teams up again with world-famous Voodoo Doughnuts to celebrate two of the greatest inventions on planet earth: beer & doughnuts. Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Mango Astronaut Ale was inspired by the Voodoo Doughnut Mango Tango, a doughnut filled with mango jelly and topped with vanilla frosting and a tangy orange powder.

green flash*Green Flash Tangerine Soul Style IPA – Green Flash adds tangerine zest to their IPA that is brewed with citra, simcoe, and cascade hops. This will be a year-round beer added to their lineup.

Beer Review #116: Central Waters Satin Solstice Imperial Stout

centralEven when warm weather approaches I still like to kick back on the deck on a summer evening and enjoy some stouts. Imperial stouts are usually associated with cold weather but I would consider them year-round. There are quite a few good ones out there right now and with Central Waters Brewing entering our market (www.centralwaters.com)

Smooth and creamy with the nice flavor of chocolate, coffee, and  the nice warming sensation you get from the alcohol makes this an imperial stout that will frequent my fridge. More from Central Waters:

This smooth, creamy stout and a crackling fireplace are the perfect answer to a wintry evening in Wisconsin. The rich coffee flavor compliments the “warm, fuzzy feeling” you get from the abundant alcohol. Formerly a winter seasonal, named Satin Solstice.

While barrel-aged stouts are all the rage it is nice having this along with some Old Rasputin to keep on hand. Maybe not the best to age too long, but it will last a while in the fridge or cellar and not have too much of the flavor compromised. Central Waters is doing some really great things and it’s great to see their brews on our shelves here in Eastern Iowa.
