After every year I like to run down my favorite Iowa brewed beers! This year, I’ve teamed up with one of my good buddies and an all-around beer connoisseur, the great and wonderful Duke of Drinking. We compiled our list of the 10 best Iowa beers of ’24 based on the following criteria: *The beer had to be unique to 2024 *The beer had to be the first time either of us have tried *Of course it has to be Iowa brewed
Of course, we didn’t get to try them all as much as we’d have liked to, so if there’s a beer that didn’t make our list but made yours, we’d love to hear about it! In fact, shoot me your list or check out this post on Facebook – Iowa Beer page and give us your top 10!
Before I ramble on with our list, a shout out to all of those wonderful brewers/breweries/restaurants/establishments that give us the opportunity to imbibe on the wonderful drink that is beer. Thank you all very much and we appreciate you! On to the list:
**Field Day Revel** – 12.55% ABV – Oak Aged Imperial Stout blended with a Fresh Imperial Stout than rested on Almonds, Marzipan, Vanilla, & Chocolate. Revel in the Drink, makes you want to dance and party during this Holiday Season. This beer packed a ton of flavor and you get the flavor of each ingredient throughout each sip. I was worried it would be too sweet, but it had just the right amount. Wonderfully done brew.
**Dimensional Gladius** – 14.6% ABV – Blend of Imperial Stouts aged in Heaven Hill and Blaum Brothers Bourbon barrels for 21-26 months. What I loved the most about this beer is that it was just a big ass imperial stout with no adjuncts. Dimensional let the barrels do the talking and they sure did. I was worried as the nose smelled hot, but damn, the flavor was delicious. Viscous and full of that lovely barrel flavor. Fantastic beer.
**Dimensional/Field Day Dang** 8% ABV – Hazy DIPA with Nelson Sauvin, Motueka Hop Kief, and Citra. Brewed in collaboration with Field Day Brewing. One of the best Iowa made IPAs of the year, and one of the best IPAs made in the world this year. Dang packed a well-balanced hop punch, and if you have Nelson Sauvin and Citra in there, it’s sure to taste good. Hoping this one gets brewed again, delicious stuff!
**Clock House Orange Stripe** 13% ABV – Long-Boil Imperial Stout aged in a Driftless Glen Bourbon De Naranja barrel for 12 months. Rested on a bed of Madagascar Vanilla Beans and Ghana Cacao Nibs. Tasting notes of Orange Cream and Dark Chocolate. The perfect timing of this release as it tastes just as those chocolate covered oranges you see during the holidays do. Clock House always does a wonderful job with their stouts, long boil which equates to a viscous bottle of greatness. The orange was the perfect subtle flavor at the end of your sip. Another winner from Clock House!
**Dimensional Survey Says** – 10% ABV – Hazy Triple IPA with HBC 1019 Cryo, NZH 105, and Citra. Brewed in collaboration with G5 Brewing. You want to talk about a scary triple IPA? Survey Says is just that…absolutely delicious and scarily drinkable for a Triple IPA. This was well-balanced and smooth. Just an outstanding job by Dimensional.
**Clock House Veltross** – 8% ABV – Sanction #2. Double NEIPA dry-hopped with premium lot selected Nectaron and Citra. Not only does Clock House excel at the big boy stouts, their IPA and double IPA game are always on point as well. This year they gave us Veltross, a definite beer of the year contender, part of their “Sanction” series, which hopefully doesn’t mean we won’t see it again. Maybe if we ask Todd and Blake nicely they will brew this baby up again? Pretty please?
**Big Grove Richard the Whale: Golden Ticket 2024** – 13% ABV – The 2024 Richard the Whale Golden Ticket variant is inspired by coconut almond macaroons and we blended this extra special batch of Richard The Whale infused with toasted organic coconut and almonds. Year after year this is an extremely sought after brew, and year after year Big Grove delivers it’s decadence. Hard to get, but if you’re lucky enough, savor this baby, it’s delightful.
**Pulpit Rock Alma Mater**- 5.38% – Alma Mater pale ale is the official craft beer of Luther College. A portion of proceeds support The Luther Fund. Skal Norse! The official craft beer of Luther College should maybe be the pale ale of the state of Iowa! Extremely crushable, wonderfully refreshing, and full of flavor. Pulpit Rock really nailed this pale ale!
**Lua Respiro** – 16% – Made for Iowa Craft Beer Fest 2024. Aged in bourbon barrels for 21 months, then conditioned on Teddy Graham’s, coconut, Saigon & Korintje cinnamon, cacao nibs and vanilla soft serve. I was lucky to be in Des Moines when Lua tapped this brew. All the flavors shone and blended extremely well. Was hoping the cinnamon wouldn’t be overpowering and it wasn’t. Subtle, spot on brew. Excellent for dessert!
**Pulpit Rock BA $ticker $Shock** – 13% ABV – $ticker $hock 2024 is a blend of 35 and 38 month barrel aged imperial stouts then rested on copious amounts of toasted coconut and almonds. Pulpit wows with this one, extremely thick and full of coconut flavor, not too sweet, just the perfect amount and the barrel and chocolate blend perfectly. Another taste of decadence.

Phase Three DDH Double Pixel 6/4/16oz CANS – Flagship hazy IPA, times two! This hazy double IPA has been double dry-hopped with our favorite 100% Citra hops. Enjoy dank notes of lime peel, tropical passion fruit, and pulpy grapefruit on our fluffy, hazy base. 8% ABV – IL
Phase Three Perception of Depth 6/4/16oz CANS – This Brown Ale lands somewhere between an American Brown and an English Brown. 100% English malts with some American hop character. Pale chocolate malt and biscuit malt provide subtle coffee and fresh baked artisan bread flavors. 6.5% ABV – IL

Drie Fonteinen Cuvée Armand & Gaston HONEY 3/1.5L MAGNUM bottles – This particular Cuvée Armand & Gaston has been blended with lambics from 7 different barrels and originating from 11 different brews. The oldest portion of lambic was brewed on the 28th of November 2014. While blending, we added spring honey from our own bee hives. 3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze Cuvée Armand & Gaston is a blend of one-, two-, and three-year old traditional lambics, all brewed at Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen. Spontaneous fermentation, patient maturation in oak barrels, and continued evolution in the bottle result in a distinctively complex beer. No two bottlings are alike, as there are multiple variables in the blending process, a variety of barrel sizes and shapes, differences in aged lambic proportions, etc. This cuvée, like all of our lambic, is 100% natural, authentic, spontaneously fermented, and crafted with steadfast adherence to tradition, like Armand and Gaston Debelder have always done it. Drie Fonteinen Oude Kriek 12/375ml bottles – 3 Fonteinen Oude Kriek is the result of macerating hand-picked whole sour cherries on young lambic for at least four months, in a proportion of one kilogram of fruit per litre of lambic. The kriek lambic is then blended again with more young lambic to obtain a minimum intensity of 35% fruit, and is bottled immediately afterwards. These bottles are then stored in our cellars for at least five months so that the kriek lambic can develop into a beautiful, traditional, and refined Oude Kriek. With a pleasant tartness and organic notes of almond and cinnamon as it warms in the glass, 3 Fonteinen Oude Kriek, will age perfectly but may lose some of the vibrant red colours and forest fruit aromas. This unfiltered and unpasteurised lambic is all-natural with no artificial juices, syrups, or sugars added. Traditional Lambic is living, cultural heritage rooted in the Zenne valley!
Drie Fonteinen Framboos Vat (Oogst 2019) 12x375ml – This specific Framboos has a final fruit intensity of 310 grams of raspberries per liter of finished Framboos. The Lambiken used comes from three barrels and six different brews. EXCEPTIONAL!

Brewfist Trinidad El Fernando 12/330ml – Barleywine aged for a year in Port barrels. Fermented with Saison yeast, although it is the most alcoholic version, it presents overall a lot of balance. Fruit and wood dominate both on the nose and in the mouth. Exemplary. 14.4 ABV – IT
Brewfist Trinidad El Vasco 12/330ml – Barleywine aged for a year in Port barrels. The aroma is dominated by ripe pineapple and plum fruitiness and noble cellar rot. Wood, oxidation and a liquorish viscosity to the taste. Untamable. 11.7 ABV – IT

Ridgeway Santa’s Butt Winter Porter 12/500ml BOT – This special porter is made for winter — rich and warming, the way they like it in the North Pole. It was inspired by this famous line from a well-loved children’s story book: “And Santa sat on his great butt, drinking a hearty brew.” 6% ABV – UK

Ridgeway Bad King John 12/500ml – Incredible English dark ale. An unusual beer, it is neither a porter nor a stout, but a black ale. It is a proper English pale with the addition of heavily roasted grains. Only English hops are used, some of them later in the boil to leave behind essential oils and hop aroma. This beer tests the drinker’s senses – the eyes are saying it’s heavy, the mouth says it’s light, perhaps sometimes dangerously so…. 6% ABV – UK
Ridgeway Imperial Russian Stout 12/330ml BOT – Brewed only once a year. Slow, extended ageing before bottling differentiates this style from simply being a strong stout or porter. It makes Ridgeway Imperial Russian Stout considerably more vinous and sharp than an export stout. There is just that little nod towards a Lambic beer, with very roasty and very bitter flavors. The bitterness mellows over time in the bottle so the style is not intended to be overtly hoppy. 10% ABV – UK
Coniston Old Man Ale 12/500ml bottles – Old English Ales. A radically different beer… it has roast barley added to the pale and crystal malts. It has a deep burnished copper colour, a rich port wine aroma, a big chocolate and creamy malt palate and a dry, grainy, roasty finish balanced by hop bitterness and tart fruit. It is a remarkably complex beer that deepens and changes as you sip it. 4.8% ABV – UK

De Ranke Pere Noel 24/330ml BOT – Père Noël is a Christmas ale, though very different from any other Christmas ales you might know. While most Christmas ales are rich & sweet, this one is amber-coloured, 7% vol. Alc. strong and tastes quite bitter. The complex taste is completed with the addition of liquorice. In the recipe we can also find pale malt, Munich malt, Caramel malt, Brewers Gold hops and Hallertau hops. 7% ABV – BE
De Ranke Cuvee 6/750ml BOT – Cuvée De Ranke is a mixed fermentation, blended ale. A combination of barrel-aged beer and lambic. 70% Belgium sour ale with 30% lambic. 7% ABV – BE
De Ranke Grapevine Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Lambic 6/750ml BOT – Once a year De Ranke releases the marvellous ‘Grapevine’ series. This year sees the ‘Trebbiano d’Abruzzo’ edition, with red grapes from this famous Italian wine growing region being the star of the show, resting in the barrel mixed fermented beer to make for a wonderfully complex Fruit Lambic. A wine-like beer that explores the boundaries between beer and wine. 6.5% ABV – BE
De Ranke Kriek Audenaerde 6/750ml – Flanders Oud Bruin. This beer is inspired by the tradition of steeping whole cherries on old brown beer in the nearby city of Oudenaarde, where many producers were making it in the first half of the 20th century. De Ranke Mirakel 6/750ml – Delicious Gueuze. “The lambics used in this blend are one, two and three years old. Two of them are real lambics made by traditional producers of the valley of the Senne river. The third one is made in our own brewery and we’ve called it Spierelambic, after the tiny river that runs near the brewery. We love this style and decided to try to make it ourselves. that it seemed to work, was a miracle to us”. 5.5% ABV – BE

Our Stammtisch was brewed to celebrate this idea of community and socializing. It’s a traditional German Pilsner featuring a blend of Hallertau and Strisselspalt hops, giving it a pronounced herbal and spicy aroma. It’s crisp and dry with a light grainy malt profile. We think it’s the perfect accompaniment to any gathering. 5.4% ABV – MO
URBAN CHESTNUT DORFBIER 6/4/16oz CANS – Munich Dunkel. Some refer to the Dunkel style as the original bier of Munich and its surrounding villages (Dörfer). This everyday bier ranges in color and sweetness depending on the amount of Munich and roasted malts used. The sweetness of the malt is then balanced by the use of another Bavarian friend…the Hallertau hop…in this specific case, Hersbrucker, grown near Wolnzach, Hallertau. 5.2% ABV – MO

Gladius is a 14.6% ABV Imperial Stout aged in Heaven Hill and Blaum Brothers bourbon barrels for 21-26 months. Gladius will be released in person on 11/23 at 11am. Limits determined on turnout.

This agreement ensures that Peace Tree’s beloved beers, including the award-winning Blonde Fatale, remain integral to lowa’s rich craft beer scene. After a 15 year run as a leader in the lowa Craft beer scene, Peace Tree Brewing of Knoxville, IA ceased operations in the Summer of 2024.
Peace Tree Brewing’s owner, Megan McKay, a pioneer in the lowa Craft Beer Industry, stated, “My commitment has always been to create exceptional beers that resonate with our community and beyond. Selling to Backpocket Brewing allows Peace Tree’s legacy to live on, ensuring that our cherished brands will be continued to be enjoyed.” Her dedication to the brand she painstakingly built has set benchmarks for quality and innovation, solidifying Peace Tree Brewing as a cornerstone of lowa’s craft brewing identity.
Blonde Fatale, Peace Tree’s flagship and a gateway beer for many new craft beer drinkers, has garnered acclaim and accolades, becoming a legacy brand in lowa and nationwide. Blonde Fatale was awarded a gold medal at the 2014 World Beer Cup and in 2023 was recognized by Untappd Community Awards as the #3 best Belgian-style blonde ale beer crafted in the United States. Known for its exquisite blend of flavors and consistent quality, Blonde Fatale is set for a grand re-entry into the market, inviting both loyal fans and new enthusiasts to experience it once again. Other Peace Tree brands will be introduced back into the market in the future with production being focused on the flagship brand initially.
