It’s the Most Wonderful Time for a Beer! “Glyn-Mawr Winery” Iowa Beer Advent Calendar Day #1!

And it begins! The only thing that used to get me excited about December 1st was the Family Channel/FreeForm, whatever the channel is called now, and their “25 Days of Xmas” constant cartoons and Christmas shows. Now, there’s a better reason! Glyn-Mawr-The Local Winery in Mount Vernon has come up with an Iowa brewery-only beer advent calendar. The brainchild of owner Anna Wilson, this advent calendar consists of 24 different Iowa brewed beers from 15 different Iowa breweries. Thanks to everyone who ordered a calendar and to the breweries who participated, it seems like this was considered a success and I hope everyone gets to experience how great the beer is in our fine state! Excited all day to get home to rip open my first beer present of the year, I was greeted with….

DAY #1 BEER #1 – Thew Brewing “This Most Beautiful Fabric” – this Hazy pale ale is brewed with cashmere hops which can bring many different citrus and tropical fruit tasting profiles. Coming in at 5.25% this is definitely a sessionable brew that you can enjoy a few of while watching your favorite Christmas show. Well done Flenker family! Grab some beers from Thew this holiday season and visit them at 301 2nd Ave SW in Cedar Rapids! They run daily specials, crowlers to go and are just great people to support! Check out their Facebook page by clicking here.

Don’t forget to swing through downtown Mt. Vernon and visit Glyn Mawr-The Local Winery this holiday season as well. Their house made wines, cold local Iowa beer, various local cheeses from Dan and Debbies, holiday decorations along with just a stunning building to visit is well worth the trip. They are running door buster prizes and deals on many items throughout their shop and are amazing people to support as well! Cheers Wilson family! Lion Bridge releasing “Off-Grid” IPA next Wednesday! (9/9)

offgrid

Lion Bridge Brewing will be adding another IPA to their lineup next Wednesday when they release “Off-Grid” IPA. Many folks in the CR and surrounding area will appreciate how this beer was brewed! 10 days without power after the Derecho devastated Cedar Rapids, Lion Bridge had to turn to a generator like many others to save this beer! Here’s more on this release:

Off Grid IPA (6.6%) – Brewed to commemorate the week of production after the Derecho Storm of 2020 where we had no power at the brewery for 10 days. A robust generator kept our production going and saved our beer. This Galaxy-hopped IPA is a delicious product of these trying times.”

Iowa Beer Sneak Peek! Clock House Low Bandito!

low bandito

Before I get into the details of this brew from Clock House I just want to share the release info for it which is coming this Wednesday!

*For the first time Clock House will be offering their delicious imperial stout in 16 oz cans starting this Wednesday, May 6th starting at 3:00 p.m. Low Bandito is an imperial stout aged with habanero peppers, limes, cacao nibs, vanilla beans and cinnamon. This is what you think a Mexican hot chocolate would taste like. This bad boy checks in at 11% ABV. Pick yours up at Clock House curbside starting this Wednesday!

Alright, there are the deets for the release. Onto the tasty brew itself. Was very grateful to Clock House staff for hooking me up with one first of all, so thank you to them! I’ve been spending a lot of my time driving over and picking up Pineapple Witch Slap on what seems to be a daily basis but this Wednesday I’ll be driving over for Low Bandito.

POUR
Dark viscous pour, aroma of cinnamon and cocoa take center stage with vanilla on the back. Nice looking tan head on this thing this dissipates.

TASTE
Cinnamon, chocolate, and vanilla right away and then a small shot of heat from the habanero, the lime is very subtle, but you can definitely get some faint citrus from it.

OVERALL
I can’t wait to get more of this. A few to sip on when the spring evening gets a tad cool and the sun goes down and maybe a few to store to see what the flavors do. Clock House has been upping their game constantly; IPAs, Sours, stouts, etc…they’ve been pushing it and they’ve been delivering! Get there this Wednesday folks and if you get some I’d love to hear your thoughts! Cheers!
