Iowa Celebrating a Jolly Pumpkin Wedding!

Our favorite sour-only brewery has sent Abu Nawas a few things that are only going to be sent to a very limited set of non-Michigan places, including a special beer Ron Jeffries brewed in honor of his son Daemon’s wedding next weekend in Hawaii. The wedding beer is Keiki No More (Children no more…) It’s brewed with raspberry, lime and lime peel, and then aged in wood 5 months and given another dose of raspberries. We are encouraging everyone to raise their glass to the happy couple when they have the beer and tag Jolly Pumpkin with the below hashtags: #JollyWedding #FromIowaWithLove

Here’s more on Keiki No More:

Keiki No More is a saison base that was then refermented with raspberry, lime, and lime peel. This is a very special beer, brewed in celebration of the marriage of Ron and Laurie’s son Daemon and his bride Ashley. The addition of raspberry has given this beer a brilliant pink grapefruit hue. Eruptions of sweet raspberry jam and our house funk fill the nose. While the tastes of raspberry cobbler, ripe raspberry funk, subtle hints of key lime pie, and light acidity, will have you falling head over heels in love.

This beer will be on draft in Iowa at Marquee Pizza, El Bait Shop, and Cheese Bar. Along with that big and super limited release Abu Nawas will also be bringing limited supplies of the below Jolly Pumpkin beers as well. If you can get to Marquee, Cheese Shop, or El Bait Shop, order Keiki No More, raise your glass and toast the newlyweds but also toast Jolly Pumpkin and their staff and be grateful that our state gets their wonderful beers!

Surly Nein Iowa Release Details

neinSurly Nein, an imperial smoked hefeweizen, will be hitting a few tap lines around Iowa in the coming weeks. Here’s more from Surly’s website:

We’re celebrating our 9th anniversary this year with the release of NEIN, an Imperial Smoked Hefeweizen. We want to celebrate with all of you, so starting on Monday, September 28, we’re having release parties for NEIN in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Chicago and Iowa. We’ll have NEIN on draft at all the events as well as NEIN merch giveaways, so come out and raise a glass to nein years of Surly!

Make sure to check out our event page for each party for details and get ready for NEIN to hit stores, bars and restaurants near you!

NEIN draws from the traditional banana and clove notes of Hefeweizen yeasts and layers on deeper toned malt flavors, a distinctly smoky character from oak-smoked wheat malt and charred “honeycombs” of white oak. All of the malt comes from Weyermann Malting, a family-owned operation in Bamberg Germany, which is the center of Rauchbier (smoked beers) in Germany. The inspiration came from a trip that our head brewer Todd Haug recently took to Bamberg to visit the Weyermann facility. Here’s the Iowa release info:

El Bait owners possibly opening Iowa Craft Beer Restaurant

bait shopI received the following information from my good buddy sLim and also the link is from El Bait Shop looks like they will be opening an all Iowa craft beer restaurant with 75 Iowa beers on tap and serve Iowa food products. Here’s the original article from

Full Court Press is known for its great beer bars with international themes like The Royal Mile (British) and Hessen Haus (German). For its next project, the group is aiming a little closer to home.

The Iowan Craft Beer Hall will feature more than 75 Iowa beers on tap and serve predominately Iowa food products. Iowa now has more than 50 breweries producing beer, which should provide plenty of beers to choose from.

But one thing Full Court Press is still looking for is a location. The group is currently seeking developers to find the right location downtown.

“We can’t keep up. We need a space that’s all Iowa,” Full Court Press partner Jeff Bruning said of the beers at El Bait Shop. “The Little Giant Beer Summit we put on is kind of the festival version of what we’re going to do. The Iowan will have the best of what Iowa Breweries have to offer.”

Bruning said The Iowan Craft Beer Hall is an idea he and his partners have been brewing up for years, ever since he tried his first Peace Tree beer.

“People thought we were crazy in 2006 when we put 105 taps up on the wall for craft beers (at El Bait Shop),” Bruning said. “Now there are all these Iowa breweries starting to come up at the same time the craft beer industry is blowing up; things are going so well that Iowa beer warrants a bar dedicated to it.”

Bruning said that Des Moines IPA from Confluence was El Bait Shop’s best selling beer in 2013 and that six out of the bar’s top 10 selling beers were from Iowa.

Full Court Press has put on a number of beer events, including Oktoberfest, the Little Giant Beer Summit and Des Moines Beer Week. The Iowan Craft Beer Hall is not affiliated with the Iowa Craft Beer Tent.

Featured breweries at The Iowan Craft Beer Hall could include:

515 Brewing (Des Moines), Albia Brewing (Albia), Backpocket Brewing (Coralville), Boone Valley Brewing (Boone), C.I.B. (Chefs In Black) Brewery (Carson), Confluence Brewery (Des Moines), Exile Brewing (Des Moines), Firetrucker (Ankeny), Granite City (Clive), Great River (Davenport), Kalona Brewing (Kalona), Keg Creek Brewing (Glendale), Madhouse Brewing (Newton), Millstream Brewing (Amana), New American Brewing (Ankeny), Peacetree Brewing (Knoxville), Rock Bottom Brewery (West Des Moines), Sutliff Cider (Lisbon), Toppling Goliath Brewing (Decorah), Twisted Vine Brewery (St Charles), Van Houzen Brewing (Newton), West O Beer (West Okoboji) with more to be added in the future.

Des Moines Friends, this is happening! Surly @ El Bait Shop!

surlySaw the following information on Surly’s facebook page! Hopefully a sign of things to come! Looks like a must-attend event if you are in the Des Moines area. Hopefully I can make it!

We’re road tripping to Iowa and we’re bringing beer! On April 3rd, 4-8 pm, we’ll be hanging out and pouring beers at el Bait Shop in Des Moines. We’ll be bringing: Furious, Hell, Cynic, Bender, Cacao Bender, Smoke, Blakkr, Mild, Darkness & Pentagram. BUT we’re NOT distributing broadly to Iowa (yet), just sharing beers for the night with our neighbors to the south. We’ll add more details and a FB event soon.
