lambic1

A nice mix of styles coming from the latest Abu Nawas drop as we will get puckered with some old world lambics but also can grab the latest from Evil Twin! Here we go:

Brouwerij Kerkom

  • Kerkom Reuss 12/750ml – Blend of old Boon Lambic with Belgian Blonde.  6.5% ABV.

Brouwerij BOON

  • BOON OUDE GEUZE12/12.7oz (12/375ml). Oude Geuze Boon is one of the finest examples of the traditional 100% spontaneous fermentation Lambic style. To moderate the sourness, Boon Brewery only brews Lambic in the 7 cold months, from early October until April, according to the traditional “turbid mash” system. This Lambic beer is brewed from 40% unmalted wheat, 60% of barley malt, aged hops, and wild yeasts collected from our coolship and is aged for 1, 2 or 3 years in oak casks. The blend, a mild average of 18 months old Lambic (unsweetened, unfiltered, unpasteurized) is refermented in the bottle and can be stored up to 20 years. Brewed in Lembeek, the village that gave Lambic its name. Awards at the World Beer Championships: 2008 Gold, 2010 Silver, 2012 Gold Medal. 7% ABV.
  • BOON FRAMBOISE 12/12.7oz (12/375ml). Framboise Boon is a traditional Belgian Lambic fruit-beer. It is brewed according to the traditional Lambic style of spontaneous fermentation. Only fresh raspberries (25%) and wild cherries (5%)are used for this Lambic beer. Framboise Boon is the missing link between beer and wine and is served chilled in flute glasses. NO artificial sweeteners, flavorings, preservatives or coloring agents. Brewed in Lembeek, the village that gave Lambic its name. 5% ABV.
  • BOON KRIEK 12/12.7oz (12/375ml). Kriek Boon is a traditional Belgian Lambic fruit-beer. It is brewed according to the traditional Lambic style of spontaneous fermentation. Only fresh cherries (25%) are used. Kriek Boon is slightly sweet, with the surprising natural fragrance of sour cherries and almonds. 4% ABV.
  • Mikkeller / Boon Oude Geuze 12/750 ml – The Mikkeller Oude Gueze lambic is a new unique collaboration between Mikkeller and Boon. Blending lambic from one to three years old, this blend is made in the traditional method of spontaneous fermentation in the Senne valley, Belgium. This special blend has a distinct twist being matured in oak foeders previously used for Calvados. Ideal before a meal or paired with cheese. 6.4% ABV.

Beer Review #120: Nomader Weisse by Evil Twin Brewing

Now, I was in the dark when it comes to the difference between a gose and berliner weisse, but I believe the difference, and please correct me if I’m wrong, is a Gose style beer is more on the salty side and a berliner weisse is more tart and is obviously made with wheat…could be wrong, but that’s the interpretation I got.

Anyway, this brew was given to me by a buddy at work who has become a fan of the gose/berliner weisse beers as well. He found it at Oakland Road Hy-Vee in Cedar Rapids, and I haven’t seen it anywhere else. Although it’s available now it would be an ideal beer for the spring and summer months. This beer is much more tart than a gose, but there is some salt as well. A bit of sweetness from the wheat and some funk and a bit of tropical fruitiness.

Here’s more on this brew:

Nomads; constantly moving, ’round and ’round; sometimes settle, if just for a bit. Perhaps the muse moves one to brew a sharp and clean session beer, one inspired by the Berliner-weisse of old, and the nomad rests. Enjoy this beer, here, there, perhaps north of Madison Square Park, in lovely New York City. Wherever you are, this beer was made nice, simply for you.

Glad to see this in cans as well and once again, a perfect session beer. My only problem is that with multiple sours for the Baron comes the awfulness that is acid reflux..but that’s why tums are made, so I drink this brew! I’m not sure on the release schedule of this beer but I would love to see it again this spring and specifically a few of these for opening day for my Dodgers.

STYLE: Berliner Weisee

ABV: 4%

PURCHASED AT: Oakland Road Hy-Vee

POUR: Hazy golden pour with a medium white head.

AROMA: Lemon smell with a bit of malt.

TASTE: Lemon/citrus flavor with sweetness from the wheat. You get the vinegar/brine as well.

Ratebeer.com rating: 89/100

Beeradvocate rating: 87/100

Overall: B+

My recommendation: If you need your sour fix this is definitely the beer for you. Tart as can be with a bit of saltiness. I hope to have more of this in my fridge for March Madness going into MLB opening day. Dodger dog and this beer would be just perfect.

Beer Review #118: Evil Twin Imperial Biscotti Break Natale Pretty Please with a Cherry on Top

eveil twinThe name sold me on this brew, and with most Evil Twin offerings I was expecting it to be good. Some of their brews have been great, and some I thought missed the mark for my tastebuds, but this one seems like a can’t miss. Adding sour cherries to an imperial porter had me salivating on the spot so I grabbed a bottle which my local Hy-Vee had marked down to $7.99 from the original $13.99 price tag.

I shared this bottle with a buddy of mine and before drinking it I went ahead and read some reviews on Untappd from some people whose opinions I respect and half of those fine folks found this beer to be a bit medicinal and didn’t care for it while others thought it to be one of their favorite porter style beers they’ve had. Here’s what I found:

Off the pour with a decent sized tan head. Dark black color and quite a bit of lacing around my glass. The aroma wasn’t dominated by the cherry at all but much like any imperial stout/porter; chocolate and coffee were very present. The taste right away was a bitter chocolate with a small amount of dark fruit present. Not a cherry overload, but I was hoping for more cherries than what I got. Maybe the “cherry on top” in the title suggests a tad bit of cherry flavoring and not a more abundant amount, so if that’s the case, my bad.

Overall, it was decent. At $13.99 a bottle I would pass as I was hoping for a little more than “decent”, but the $7.99 price tag made me feel better about the purchase. Was this something that needed to be fresh? If so, that’s my fault. I think a Founders Porter or Deschutes Black Butte could satisfy my porter needs just as well as this imperial, if not better.

My recommendation:I might take a little flack for this rating but it just didn’t do it for me. It was decent. That’s the bland word I would use to describe it. A lot of great porters out there that I would buy over this.
