A personal favorite makes it’s return as Java Gypsy is coming back to Clock House with a two variants available! Release is on March 12th, here’s more from Clock House:
JAVA GYPSY is back on Friday March 11th. And this year we brewed up something special for you! We brewed not 1 but 2 specialty brews for you, featuring our friends from @roasterscoffeehiawatha and @roastedonross .
For the first variant we decided to team up with Roasters Coffee House in Hiawatha! One of our favorite beans from them in the past has been their medium roast Caramel Pecan. If you can remember way back to our very first coffee porter (yes the one without a name) we actually used this flavored bean to craft that delicious brew. These beans provide very strong notes of pecan and sweet caramel that meld together in perfect harmony.
We teamed up with Ross Street Roasting Co and ordered a variety of their delicious offerings. After cold steeping three types of beans we were blown away by the results. All three were unique and delicious. It was hard to select our favorite from the group! After much thought and consideration we decided on their Bohemian Gothic. This bean gave our porter notes of chocolate and subtle smoke without coming across bitter. We’re excited to release this delicious offering! Be sure to look for their beans in stores.
We will be selling mixed 4-packs for $14. And each volume will be available on draft as well.

HIGH-ENA – Fidens Brewing Collab Stalking the sandy terrains of desolate exoplanet landscapes was a spotted hyena. We slowly approached the animal with our amigos from @fidensbrewing as it began to melt upwards, defying gravity before our eyes. At the end of each molten drip appeared sweet cherries and limes unlike anything we’ve ever seen.
Ever haze – Hazy IPA It’s a haze bomb with a rich bouquet of hops and just enough bitterness to keep it all in balance. This beer will keep you coming back with its bold and complex flavor.
A big weekend of beer, music, food and fun is coming up at the Lion Bridge Brewery taproom in the Czech Village in Cedar Rapids as the brewery celebrates their 8th Anniversary! They will be releasing two new beers, Crushberry Sour and Shindig Hazy IPA, Winterland will be playing, there will be free cake and of course their tasty food menu! Party starts when the doors open at 11 a.m., band starts at 5!
Here’s more on the two new releases:
Crushberry Kettle sour – 6.7% – For our 8th Anniversary, we wanted to come up with something that embodies the “terroir” of Cedar Rapids. When Crunchberry Day gives its sweet aromatic embrace to our fair city, we are children again; innocent and giggling. We hope this beer if fun for you. Drink on Crunchberry Day for extra enjoyment.
Shindig – (Hazy Double IPA with, Idaho 7, Galaxy, Bru-1, Sabro, Vic Secret 8.8%) – 8 years is no small feat for a small business. We are grateful for your support and we are grateful for super pungent tropical hazy IPAs. Cheers!
When Reunion was teasing this release and having Wake involved in the brewing process, I was already sold. Reading further about this release and being a fan of Brett IPAs, I was super excited to have the chance to get my hands on some of these brews! Here’s the description from Reunion:
Brewed in collaboration with the wizards of WAKE BREWING. This nightmarish IPA was fermented with Brettanomyces Claussenii for a funky and tropic twang and dosed with heaps of Cryo Mosaic, Citra Lupomax and El Dorado Lupomax.
There have been a few Brett IPAs that I’ve really enjoyed. I was lucky enough to score Allagash’s “Little Brett”, which I enjoyed, but wanted a bit more hop presence. The Stone Enjoy After Brett IPA was tasty and I did purchase multiple bottles and enjoyed them. Crooked Stave has been a favorite brewery of mine and their Hop Savant was outstanding, tons of barnyard with a splash of hops….and then Tropic Nightmare came along….
First of all, this beer is beautiful..I’ve had a fresh pour from Reunion and multiple cans and it’s a stunning beer. Orange juice look with a thick frothy white head. Aroma is hops up front, dank and lovely. If you keep your nose in the glass for a bit longer you get that barnyard funk that brettheads love and desire!
Extremely refreshing! The funk shines and is wonderfully balanced with the hop bill. Tartness from the brett on the back of the tongue but also that refreshing and juicy splash of hops. Complex and delicious. Lots of flavors going on in this beer and for me, all of them wonderful.
This has been such a sight for sore eyes release. Something different, something new and a tip of the cap to Reunion and Wake for going in on a style that hasn’t necessarily dominated the market and totally crush it with Tropic Nightmare. Worth seeking, I’ll need more! Get to the brewery on the Coralville Strip and Drink This beer!

Watermelon, Papaya, and Mango Fruit Smoothie Seltzer As my mother in law said – “Joe that Pina Colada was a 10 out of 10, this one might be a 20!” I would have to agree, it’s fantastic big watermelon and Papaya notes. It’s made with Mango puree, Watermelon juice, papaya and passionfruit.
Slow Clap – NEIPA (7.5%) At BlackStack we try to remember that every raucous standing ovation begins with one brave soul *CLAP* Just like in the movies. This beer is certainly worth a slow build. *CLAP* We used Strata and Cashmere in championship game movie montage amounts. *CLAP* So pour one out for the underdog who showed a lot of heart, but still lost. And the overbearing dad who learns that winning really isn’t everything. *CROWD GOES F%*$ING WILD*
Exit Row – Triple Hazy IPA (10.0%) In the event of an emergency, please take solace in the fact that you are enjoying mile high quantities of our hand selected Citra Cryo, Strata & High Oil Centennial. Please make sure you have had your fill before sharing with those around you. All that extra legroom comes with responsibility
Spare Parts – Dark lager (5.3%) We’ve been brewing this on and off since the garage days and it was one of the 4 beers we had on tap when we opened. Oddly enough, this also happens to be the beer we get the single most requests for in cans. You’re made of spare parts, aren’t ya bud? That’s a Texas Sized 10-4 good buddy
Mallow – dbl marshmallow laager (its fantastic) Mallow is a Lager w/ marshmallow, vanilla bean & milk sugar
Double False Pattern – DDH New England Pale Ale Double False Pattern is a England Double Pale Ale w/ oats, hopped & double dry hopped w/ Mosaic & Simcoe
Double Fractal Hilbert Curve – DDH DIPA (cases only) We formed a junction point of elements and hops from Urban South’s Junction DIPA with our Data Point’s to bring you Junction Points. Starting off with a big base of oats and wheat, we aggressively hopped this beer in the whirlpool and dryhop with our hand selected Mosaic and relative newcomer from New Zealand, Nectaron. Junction Points pours a hazy yellow with a sweet aroma of orange crush, dank sticky-icky, Kool-Aid, and complex berry.
Fractal Galaxy – IPA (kegs and cases!) It utilizes our newest Aussie Galaxy crop making this simple yet complex liquid a batch favorite. Fractal Galaxy pours a resinous-hazy-yellow releasing complex aromas of citrus, passionfruit, and grass. Flavors of sweet orange, ripe passionfruit, peach , and a touch of lime lead into a highly resinous but juicy and creamy mouthfeel.
dHop40 – DDH DIPA (cases only) dHop40 pours hazy yellow with aromas of sliced orange wedges, assorted fruit snack gummies, and coconut. Dank pineapple juice and assorted citrus lead with pops of lime, berry, and melon with a complex Piña Colada flavor all wrapped together with a juicy finish and pointed bitterness
Fulcrum – DDH DIPA (cases only) Fulcrum pours a beautiful vivid yellow. As soon as you crack it open, bright notes of grass, citrus permeate from an imaginary coconut shell. Flavors of passionfruit, cannabis, white wine grapes, and coconut meld together beautifully with each sip. The buildup of dank fruit counters with a light and balanced bitterness and our #EQjuice finish
Lupus Salictarius – Triple IPA – Mortalis Collaboration (cases only) Paying homage to the Hops we use on a daily basis. Lupus Salictarius, which literally translates as “wolf of the willows”, is disputably the first hop plants and is said to be the botanical name immortalized by a famous Roman Philosopher (who is also an extremely tasty West Coast IPA. Respect). Tying into the Latin references Mortalis uses, we decided on a recipe that showcases some of our favorite hops to pay homage to the OG of hops and Lupus Salictarius was born.
We formed a junction point of elements and hops from Urban South’s Junction DIPA with our Data Point’s to bring you Junction Points.
Miami Berlienr – 375ml bottles Wild Ferm Fruit beerWe took our introductory wild ale, Welcome to the Jungle, and refermented it on a copious amount of Blueberry, Passionfruit, and Guava totaling more than 4 lbs/gallon (fyi that’s 2x total fruit in TABA). The result is tropical blast to your senses with an olfactory experience of a sophisticated tropical punch boosted by the expression of the 100% Brett fermentation with a beautifully #balacedacidity. This beer is jammy, dry, unfiltered, unpasteurized, naturally carbed, and will continue to evolve over time if properly cellared.
Limited item – IPA #20 – ongoing IPA series How much Citra can we put in one IPA? We decided to find out and bring it to you in the latest of our IPA Series! We used FOUR different types of Citra hops for a beer that showcases everything we love about one of the craft beer world’s go-to hops. Regular Citra combines with Citra CRYO, Citra INCOGNITO and Citra SPECTRUM for sweet, fruity aromas of bright grapefruit and orange citrus, with flavours of lemon meringue pie combined with juicy tropical fruits.
Dark Fruit Citrus Gose This dark and tart Gose uses our award winning Prophets & Nomads brew as the base, the pour is a cloudy shade of midnight. This beer is refreshing, with berries that add a surprising punch of sour on your first sip, with low hop bitterness. Coriander and Himalayan salt adds spice and just a touch of sharpness to the beer to finish.
Black House – Coffee lager an oatmeal coffee stout positively redolent with coffee aroma and flavor. It’s not acrid. It’s not astringent. It doesn’t taste like that brown puddle at the bottom of the office carafe at 4pm. It kind of tastes like chocolate covered espresso beans, only drier and more like beer. It’s the full-blown coffee beer experience in a sessionable-ish package.
Fruitlands w/Passion fruit and Guava Fruitlands is tart, fruity, & frighteningly delicious. The sour, salty base beer lays down the funky refreshment, while a heavy dose of passion fruit and guava turns the whole thing into a wall-to-wall tropical fruit fiesta. It’s a marvelous mix of elements that collides with your mouth like a fruit-filled asteroid of flavor traveling at the supersonic speed of party.
Orderville – IPA Hazy Mosaic IPA. Our most palate-crushing IPA to date, Orderville is a sledgehammer of dankness wrapped in a velvety peach pillow, underscored by a dry, chilled out malt bill that keeps your attention focused on the hop fireworks exploding in your mouth.
Dungeon Map IPA West Coast IPA with Nelson, Strata, Mosaic and Centennial hops.
Technomancer IPA Ready your grill-piece for a juice-bomb of breathtaking proportions. Hopped with exorbitant amounts of Bru-1, Strata, and Galaxy hops, this beer’s murky depths are replete with notes of pineapple, peach, and passion fruit that combine in an absurdly satisfying fashion. It’s a glorious, all-inclusive cruise through tropical waters, and your taste buds have VIP tickets.
Mystery Science Beaver 3000 – DBL NEIPA New England Double IPA with Citra, Azacca, Sabro, and Lotus Hops
Rye Barrel LiL’ Bit of wonderful – Barrel Aged Milk Stout
Lil Bit of Wonderful, our milk stout with chocolate, coconut and milk sugar aged in rye whiskey barrels for 18 months!
Lord of Peach Rings – Sour IPA with peach and peach rings Sour india pale ale with peaches and milk sugar.
This past Friday evening I was lucky enough to get a ticket to Backpocket Brewing’s BBQ and Beer dinner (thank you Sam and Savannah!), and once again, I left beyond impressed at another one of Iowa’s breweries putting together a terrific beer dinner. If you haven’t been to one, they are always worth it! Let’s take a look at what Backpocket offered:
Smoked cream cheese is definitely trending throughout the BBQ community and was a great start to this dinner. The secret rub is what makes it even better with the added smoke to it. Served with some sliced bell peppers and a house made sourdough roll and paired with Mallow Vibes peach sour, this dinner was off to a great start! The smoked cream cheese is something you need to add to your BBQ repertoire!
It’s no secret my contempt for traditional roasted turkey. I don’t hide it, it’s not something I crave/enjoy/or even look forward to during its most popular of cooking days…give me beef or fried chicken all day…HOWEVER….Mr. Aaron Vargas and his smoked cajun turkey breast has made me a believer in eating more of this bird. The perfect amount of smoke and the added cajun spices intertwining throughout the bird and paired absolutely wonderfully with the jalapeno jelly and cornbread waffle had me aching for more of this dish! Paired with Backpocket’s delicious IPA, Bubba, this may have been my favorite dish and pairing of the evening!
Course #3 and the beer pairing had me wondering how it would go down? I pastry stout paired with some smoked ribs can work? Yes it can….ribs with a ton of black pepper and a vinegar bite with a side of sauce, and then let that smokey bit stick around while you take a sip of Backpocket’s Cookie Junkie beer and the flavors mesh perfectly.
Now, brisket burnt ends sells this in itself and they were delicious…but the show stealer of this dish was the homemade tortilla. A bit thicker, softer, and more flavorful than the store bought kind, simply take a hunk of fork tender brisket, grab a pickled red onion and wrap that combo in the best tortilla I’ve ever had and then sit and smile at its deliciousness. Slingshot was the perfect accompaniment to this dish. The dunkel with a bit of smoke and nuttiness rounded out the dish nicely!
Last course…dessert. Not a big dessert guy, and at this point I would have hammered some more of that turkey and burnt ends, but once again, I found myself cleaning my plate with their smoked berry cobbler. Very tasty, not too sweet, and the homemade whipped cream added nicely to it. Paired with an easy drinking, palate cleansing lager, it was time to sit back, adjust the belt buckle and revel in what was a wonderful meal and experience.
Thank you to Aaron Vargas and the Backpocket staff for an amazing evening. Sam and Savannah Hall for getting me a ticket and letting me experience this evening! Stay tuned for more beer dinners folks and I hope you all, at some point, are able to experience one! Cheers!
