Abu Nawas Drops: Decadent and more Jester King + Blank Brewing comes to Iowa!

blank brewing.png

Another week of some tasty brews coming to us from Abu Nawas and among those is another new brewery from Brooklyn…everyone welcome Blank Brewing Company to Iowa! Here’s more on this week’s drop!

First up, Blank Brewing will be starting their time in Iowa with their stout, A Round on the House.

From the mysterious brewery: The purpose of this message is to announce the arrival of a new entity – one whose origins and whereabouts are currently unknown and shall be kept anonymous for the duration of its existence. The purpose of the entity in question is to create beers that you have never seen before. You may or may not be aware of who is involved here, but identities will not be revealed. To clarify, there is a reason you can’t see me: because unless the ideas seem either entirely youthful or utterly forward-thinking, this entity will not produce them. Labels by Mr. ZZZZ, beer from me,_______.
Is it a secret brewing cabal? The Illuminati? We’ll never know, but what we can say is they make great beer.

Jester King

  • El Cedro 750ml Bottles – Hoppy Cedar-Aged Farmhouse Ale! The resinous, slightly evergreen aroma of the cedar would meld well with citrusy American hops. The funk from our mixed culture ended up adding an interesting over-ripened fruit note. 6..5% ABV.
  • Le Petit Prince 750ml Bottles – Le Petit Prince is dry and bitter, showcasing the raw Texas Hill Country water and character of our mixed culture. It’s the Jester King beer by the people and for the people. A brewery Favorite and ours as well. 3% ABV.

  • Simple Means 750ml Bottles – Simple Means takes inspiration from Altbier. This Farmhouse version is brewed with unfiltered, raw, Hill Country well water, malted barley, beechwood smoked malted barley, and hops. 100% naturally conditioned through refermentation in the bottle. 5.6% ABV Sleep Well Beast, Sleep Well!
  • Reposé 750ml Bottles – Inspired by the dusty, hay-filled stone barns of the Nord de France that likely gave way to the rise of Bière de Garde, we included a small portion of hay in the mash for this beer. Taking a further cue from the slow and steady winter fermentation of the style, we allowed Reposé to rest in brandy barrels for almost a year. Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and 100% bottle-conditioned. 8.3% ABV.

Public Access Brewing Debuting in Iowa next week via Abu Nawas! Plus more Hoof Hearted, Omnipollo, Evil Twin, and Stillwater

abu.jpeg

Another big drop from Abu Nawas will be coming next week and along with this drop is the debut in Iowa of Public Access Brewing. Here’s more on this brewery:

The story behind Public Access starts with a little bar in Greenpoint Brooklyn you may have heard of called Tørst. Since the day it opened in spring of 2013, Tørst has been a haven for beer nerds all over the world. It has also managed to produce some serious brewing talent. Guys like Joey Pepper from Folksbier and Anthony Sorice from Root + Branch, got their start bartending at Tørst and have since moved on to make some of the highest rated, most sought-after beer on the East Coast. Another of those Tørst talents – specifically Ramon Manuel Manrique Hung. The story of the superb new Public Access Brewing is the story of Venezuelan native Ramón Manrique, who was living in Belgium when he became enchanted by the variety and traditions of Belgian beer. His passion for craft beer led him to positions at world-renowned beer destinations Tørst & Proletariat,  We could not be more psyched to start bringing his Public Access beers to you. Their first release is on deck for this month…

Iowa Celebrating a Jolly Pumpkin Wedding!

jolly

Our favorite sour-only brewery has sent Abu Nawas a few things that are only going to be sent to a very limited set of non-Michigan places, including a special beer Ron Jeffries brewed in honor of his son Daemon’s wedding next weekend in Hawaii. The wedding beer is Keiki No More (Children no more…) It’s brewed with raspberry, lime and lime peel, and then aged in wood 5 months and given another dose of raspberries. We are encouraging everyone to raise their glass to the happy couple when they have the beer and tag Jolly Pumpkin with the below hashtags: #JollyWedding #FromIowaWithLove

Keiki.jpg

Here’s more on Keiki No More:

Keiki No More is a saison base that was then refermented with raspberry, lime, and lime peel. This is a very special beer, brewed in celebration of the marriage of Ron and Laurie’s son Daemon and his bride Ashley. The addition of raspberry has given this beer a brilliant pink grapefruit hue. Eruptions of sweet raspberry jam and our house funk fill the nose. While the tastes of raspberry cobbler, ripe raspberry funk, subtle hints of key lime pie, and light acidity, will have you falling head over heels in love.

This beer will be on draft in Iowa at Marquee Pizza, El Bait Shop, and Cheese Bar. Along with that big and super limited release Abu Nawas will also be bringing limited supplies of the below Jolly Pumpkin beers as well. If you can get to Marquee, Cheese Shop, or El Bait Shop, order Keiki No More, raise your glass and toast the newlyweds but also toast Jolly Pumpkin and their staff and be grateful that our state gets their wonderful beers!

Eden Speciality Ciders Hitting Iowa Shelves Next Week via Abu Nawas Distro!

eden ciders.jpg

If you’re a fan of ciders you can start rejoicing as Abu Nawas has announced that they will be getting Eden Speciality Ciders and the distro for those will be starting next week. Here’s more from Abu Nawas:

We’ve been working for years to bring you the incredible cider from way, way northern Vermont. We are honoured to bring you Eden Ciders of Newport, Vermont
Eden produces a wide range of unique Ciders with the jewel of crown being their Ice Ciders–their versions are the most sought after and highly prized examples of this unique form of cider made in North America. It takes over 8 lbs. of apples to make one 375ml bottle of ice cider! We have all their offerings in limited stock! All are 375ml Skinny Tall Bottles. Heirloom Blend, Honey Crisp and Barrel Aged Northern Spy.
eden1.jpeg
Another product from Eden that we are extremely excited about is the Orleans Aperitif Ciders. A Farm to Bar alternative to the more industrial European Aperitif Wines commonly used in cocktails. We will sell these as a mixed case of 2 bottles each of Herbal, Bitter and Wood. All are 750ml.
eden2.jpeg
In October of last year, the United States Association of Cider Makers released a set of style guidelines for cider.  The purpose was to start providing some broad standards to a category that is nearly as diverse as wine and beer.  The intention ultimately is to give cider drinkers a better chance of choosing a bottle off the retail shelf or the restaurant menu that they might actually enjoy drinking. One key distinction in the guidelines is between ‘Modern’ cider and ‘Heritage’ cider.  Heritage ciders are made exclusively from apples – without other fruits, spices or non-apple flavourings.  Modern ciders are made from dessert variety apples, whereas Heritage ciders are made with heirloom and cider variety apples and are likely made with more traditional wine-making approaches. Because of the very limited supply, we are doing a mixed case of each of the Heritage Ciders as well as one bottle each of Eden’s flagship ciders: Dry Sparkling and Imperial Rose.
eden3.jpeg
And Lastly, we have the latest addition which is Eden Authentic Heritage Cider in a Can. Hailed by the New York Times as “the best canned cider I have ever had.” Their words not ours, but we wholeheartedly agree. Made from 100% New England Apples, this off-dry cider is packed with flavor without the cloying sweetness of a lot of commercial ciders.  Refreshing, immensely drinkable, this cider will see you through your entire meal.
