Backpocket Brewing to Continue the Legacy of Peace Tree Brewing’s Beloved Brands

In a bold move reflecting a shared vision for excellence, collaboration and innovation in the craft beer industry, Backpocket Brewing is pleased to announce its acquisition of Peace Tree Brewing’s celebrated brands. This agreement ensures that Peace Tree’s beloved beers, including the award-winning Blonde Fatale, remain integral to lowa’s rich craft beer scene. After a 15 year run as a leader in the lowa Craft beer scene, Peace Tree Brewing of Knoxville, IA ceased operations in the Summer of 2024.

Peace Tree Brewing’s owner, Megan McKay, a pioneer in the lowa Craft Beer Industry, stated, “My commitment has always been to create exceptional beers that resonate with our community and beyond. Selling to Backpocket Brewing allows Peace Tree’s legacy to live on, ensuring that our cherished brands will be continued to be enjoyed.” Her dedication to the brand she painstakingly built has set benchmarks for quality and innovation, solidifying Peace Tree Brewing as a cornerstone of lowa’s craft brewing identity.

Blonde Fatale, Peace Tree’s flagship and a gateway beer for many new craft beer drinkers, has garnered acclaim and accolades, becoming a legacy brand in lowa and nationwide. Blonde Fatale was awarded a gold medal at the 2014 World Beer Cup and in 2023 was recognized by Untappd Community Awards as the #3 best Belgian-style blonde ale beer crafted in the United States. Known for its exquisite blend of flavors and consistent quality, Blonde Fatale is set for a grand re-entry into the market, inviting both loyal fans and new enthusiasts to experience it once again. Other Peace Tree brands will be introduced back into the market in the future with production being focused on the flagship brand initially.

Ridgeway Bad King John 12/500ml – Incredible English dark ale. An unusual beer, it is neither a porter nor a stout, but a black ale. It is a proper English pale with the addition of heavily roasted grains. Only English hops are used, some of them later in the boil to leave behind essential oils and hop aroma. This beer tests the drinker’s senses – the eyes are saying it’s heavy, the mouth says it’s light, perhaps sometimes dangerously so…. 6% ABV – UK
Ridgeway Imperial Russian Stout 12/330ml BOT – Brewed only once a year. Slow, extended ageing before bottling differentiates this style from simply being a strong stout or porter. It makes Ridgeway Imperial Russian Stout considerably more vinous and sharp than an export stout. There is just that little nod towards a Lambic beer, with very roasty and very bitter flavors. The bitterness mellows over time in the bottle so the style is not intended to be overtly hoppy. 10% ABV – UK
Coniston Old Man Ale 12/500ml bottles – Old English Ales. A radically different beer… it has roast barley added to the pale and crystal malts. It has a deep burnished copper colour, a rich port wine aroma, a big chocolate and creamy malt palate and a dry, grainy, roasty finish balanced by hop bitterness and tart fruit. It is a remarkably complex beer that deepens and changes as you sip it. 4.8% ABV – UK

Blaugies Darbyste 12/375ml BOT – Darbyste, a drier, more flavorful variant of the traditional Belgian wit or blanche, is a saison made with wheat and fermented with fig juice. It comes from an old family recipe and is named for John Darby, a temperance preacher whose parishioners were oddly moved by a “soft drink” they claimed was just fig juice. At 5.8 percent, it’s a great summer beer – spritzy but full of character. Brasserie de Blaugies is truly a family operation. Founded in 1988, the brewery began with a husband and wife who prided themselves on brewing in small batches by hand-in the garage of their 300-year-old farmhouse, no less. In keeping with traditional brewing methods, all their beers are unfiltered and refermented in the bottle. 5.8% ABV – BE

De Ranke Pere Noel 24/330ml BOT – Père Noël is a Christmas ale, though very different from any other Christmas ales you might know. While most Christmas ales are rich & sweet, this one is amber-coloured, 7% vol. Alc. strong and tastes quite bitter. The complex taste is completed with the addition of liquorice. In the recipe we can also find pale malt, Munich malt, Caramel malt, Brewers Gold hops and Hallertau hops. 7% ABV – BE
De Ranke Cuvee 6/750ml BOT – Cuvée De Ranke is a mixed fermentation, blended ale. A combination of barrel-aged beer and lambic. 70% Belgium sour ale with 30% lambic. 7% ABV – BE
De Ranke Grapevine Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Lambic 6/750ml BOT – Once a year De Ranke releases the marvellous ‘Grapevine’ series. This year sees the ‘Trebbiano d’Abruzzo’ edition, with red grapes from this famous Italian wine growing region being the star of the show, resting in the barrel mixed fermented beer to make for a wonderfully complex Fruit Lambic. A wine-like beer that explores the boundaries between beer and wine. 6.5% ABV – BE
De Ranke Kriek Audenaerde 6/750ml – Flanders Oud Bruin. This beer is inspired by the tradition of steeping whole cherries on old brown beer in the nearby city of Oudenaarde, where many producers were making it in the first half of the 20th century. Iowa Eats: Dog House Lounge; Dubuque, IA

The age old foodie question that elicits many responses…who has the best (insert food) around? Well, today, I’m going to try to give you, the reader, some insight on the food question of who has the best WINGS around?

It seems that every restaurant these days has wings on the menu, and there are some very good ones, some not so good, and some terrible. My top wings list is still being compiled as I write this, there are some places that I do frequent that has excellent wings; Big Grove Solon, Old Neighborhood Pub, Club 76, Tornados, and a few more, but the latest and definitely a Top 5 contender takes us to Dubuque, Iowa and the Dog House Lounge.

The Dog House Lounge (1646 Asbury Rd.) has been opened since 1971 and has just changed up their menu. Known for their “carmichael” sandwich, (seasoned beef patty with Swiss and American cheese, similar to a burger), the Dog House has really amped their wing game. Many made in house flavors with different levels of heat and also some dry rub options as well, the Dog House has to be Dubuque’s destination for wings and maybe even be an Iowa destination for wings. On one occasion I was flanked by a friend of mine and my brother, both astute in the way of the wing, and all three of us were left waiting for the next time we can meet up and hammer some more wings! Onto the wings:

WING SAUCE #1 Raspberry Jalapeno – there was one worry with this wing and that was if it was going to be too sweet….far from it, jalapeno and raspberry compliment each other very well and a bit of spice and sweet were the perfect balance. The crispiness of the wings cannot be understated, perfectly cooked, nothing worse than a rubbery, mushy wing, Dog House has mastered the crunch and crispness of their wings. I would be hard pressed not to order the raspberry jalapeno wings on every visit. Terrific wing!

WING SAUCE #2 Hot Yaki -Asian flavors work so well in pretty much any protein and especially with wings. The sugar content makes for a sticky and super crunchy texture, not to mention absolute umami deliciousness. This was a very enjoyable wing, especially if you’re craving Asian flavors.

WING SAUCE #3 Tropical Habanero – I wanted to get lit up a bit with this one, although the flavors were superb, they weren’t has hot as I anticipated…which is ok…the habanero was subtle on the back of the tongue and once again the sweet and heat played perfectly. Another great textured wing. Let’s not forget to mention the house made blue cheese, absolutely delicious!

OVERALL: The Dog House is one of the best spots in Iowa for wings, no question about it. The rest of the menu items looked delicious as well, but wings will always be the staple. A Top 5 wing candidate for sure and I can’t wait to get back! I would love to hear your thoughts on Dog House or even recommendations on where to get some excellent wings! RIP Ron Jeffries: Jolly Pumpkin beers coming from Abu Nawas

As many of you may have heard, the legendary brewer of Jolly Pumpkin Ron Jeffries passed away this week. There are no words to express what a monumental loss to the Beer World this is. He was an inspiration, and Jolly Pumpkin was the first Beer that @abunawasbeverage brought to Iowa all the way back in 2011. Beyond being one of the original instigators of the craft beer revolution in America, he was a constant force of contagious joie de vivre.

The world was a better place because of Ron! I couldn’t honestly remember a single time not seeing him not wearing a beautiful smile! We also put together a 5th Anniversary ALL-you-can-eat brunch buffet by Chef James & Chef Dutch on Saturday, October 5th from 9-11AM! A limited amount of brunch tickets are available live on Toast RIGHT NOW and will remain online until sold out. Link is right there in our bio!

Purchase of a brunch ticket gets you access to our AYCE brunch buffet from 9-11AM (closed to the public), ability to pre-purchase ALL 2024 bottles to beat the line, and participation in our bottle share (bringing a bottle to share is encouraged but not required!!)
