Stalking the sandy terrains of desolate exoplanet landscapes was a spotted hyena. We slowly approached the animal with our amigos from @fidensbrewing as it began to melt upwards, defying gravity before our eyes. At the end of each molten drip appeared sweet cherries and limes unlike anything we’ve ever seen.

Beer and BBQ: A Perfect Match for Backpocket’s Beer Dinner!

This past Friday evening I was lucky enough to get a ticket to Backpocket Brewing’s BBQ and Beer dinner (thank you Sam and Savannah!), and once again, I left beyond impressed at another one of Iowa’s breweries putting together a terrific beer dinner. If you haven’t been to one, they are always worth it! Let’s take a look at what Backpocket offered:

Smoked cream cheese is definitely trending throughout the BBQ community and was a great start to this dinner. The secret rub is what makes it even better with the added smoke to it. Served with some sliced bell peppers and a house made sourdough roll and paired with Mallow Vibes peach sour, this dinner was off to a great start! The smoked cream cheese is something you need to add to your BBQ repertoire!

It’s no secret my contempt for traditional roasted turkey. I don’t hide it, it’s not something I crave/enjoy/or even look forward to during its most popular of cooking days…give me beef or fried chicken all day…HOWEVER….Mr. Aaron Vargas and his smoked cajun turkey breast has made me a believer in eating more of this bird. The perfect amount of smoke and the added cajun spices intertwining throughout the bird and paired absolutely wonderfully with the jalapeno jelly and cornbread waffle had me aching for more of this dish! Paired with Backpocket’s delicious IPA, Bubba, this may have been my favorite dish and pairing of the evening!

Course #3 and the beer pairing had me wondering how it would go down? I pastry stout paired with some smoked ribs can work? Yes it can….ribs with a ton of black pepper and a vinegar bite with a side of sauce, and then let that smokey bit stick around while you take a sip of Backpocket’s Cookie Junkie beer and the flavors mesh perfectly.

Now, brisket burnt ends sells this in itself and they were delicious…but the show stealer of this dish was the homemade tortilla. A bit thicker, softer, and more flavorful than the store bought kind, simply take a hunk of fork tender brisket, grab a pickled red onion and wrap that combo in the best tortilla I’ve ever had and then sit and smile at its deliciousness. Slingshot was the perfect accompaniment to this dish. The dunkel with a bit of smoke and nuttiness rounded out the dish nicely!

Last course…dessert. Not a big dessert guy, and at this point I would have hammered some more of that turkey and burnt ends, but once again, I found myself cleaning my plate with their smoked berry cobbler. Very tasty, not too sweet, and the homemade whipped cream added nicely to it. Paired with an easy drinking, palate cleansing lager, it was time to sit back, adjust the belt buckle and revel in what was a wonderful meal and experience.

Pineapple Dragonfruit Soursop Imperial Seltzer – 9% ABV
This big tropical punch drink is fantastic and takes the chill out of your bones on these freezing Wisconsin days. Pouring Bright PInk/Magenta this is one of those drinks when one gets ordered everyone who sees it will ask “hey what’s that”. This one is a winner! Super Fractal Phoenix – Eighth State Collab – Triple IPA Super Fractal, the one that started it all, Super Fractal Phoenix Set (10.5 % TIPA) a collaboration with The Eighth State Brewing Company. 

Wavelength
We dry hopped with Mosaic and Citra at a 2:1 ratio. Wavelength pours bright yellow with aromas of citrus and stone fruit with crushable flavors of mango and berry with a light refreshing finish.

We took a preposterous amount of Honeycrisp, Sweet Tango & Haralson Apple Cider & blended it with our Mixed Culture, Oak Fermented Berliner Base & a dash of Apple Cider Vinegar before conditioning on Cinnamon & Baking Spices.

Mobius Porter
We’ve gone through great lengths to refine the process to yield a Rich and Creamy Flavor and mouth feel to showcase the decadent flavors yet leave the harsh taste that dark grains can often leave behind. Incredible mouthfeel yet not cloyingly sweet to aid in its drinkability. 


Alleyway Brew IPA
Alleyway Brew has healthy dose of white wheat, flaked oats with a large dry hop of Nelson from Hop Revolution and Citra. Alleyway Brew pours an extremely vibrant opaque yellow with potent flavors of tangerine, passionfruit, mango, and Riesling grape with lighter notes of berry, and New Zealand earth. Double Fractal Gosper Island DIPA
Our Double Fractal Series brings you all the goodness of our Fractal and Super Fractal series but in DIPA format. Named after the famous Gosper Island Fractal Set pictured on the label, Double Fractal Gosper Island combines our fractal fermentation, simple 2-row base malt bill, and the brand new HBC 586 hop. If you’re unfamiliar with the still unnamed HBC 586 Hop, read MANGO MANGO MANGO! Pouring a vivid yellow, a dominant ripe tropical mango profile leads into supporting notes of guava, lychee and assorted creamy citrus creamsicles making this a liquid tropical fruit medley. With a luscious body and our escalating #EQjuice profile, Double Fractal Gosper Island will have you seeing fractals and spirals after a few juicy sips.

Fractal HBC 586/Citra IPA
Fractal HBC 586/Citra pours a vibrant yellow releasing complex aromas and flavors of mango, green grapes, dank grass, passionfruit, and earth. The taste follows the aroma with a resinous creamy mouthfeel and a firm but rounded bitterness.


Island Crush Sour
Our newest Sour IPA uses crushed white grapes, passion fruit, pink guava, and pineapple to bring you beach vibes year around. Island Crush pours a tropical yellow sunrise releasing waves of thirst-quenching flavors of tropical paradise in drink form. This tropical fruit bowl medley is fruity, vibrant and is buoyed by a luscious and creamy finish with a #BalancedAcidity that’ll make you feel like you’re chilling on the beach.


Y’all Really Need Science DDH DIPA- Cerebral Collab
Y’all Really Need Science uses a big base of oats & wheat and adds a hop bill of Citra, Nelson, and Strata, before a healthy double dry hop. Y’all Really Need Science pours bright yellow with an aroma of assorted citrus and dank grass. The flavor profile is loaded with citrus, peach fruit cup in syrup, ripe mango slices, lime gummies, and weed in a crazy drinkable dank finish loaded with #EQjuice.


Astro Fluff IPA
Astro Fluff takes one of our latest tropical fruit forward IPA’s and adds astronomical addition of Marshmallow. Pouring like a glass of hoppy haze milk custard, you’ll instantly get pleasant whiffs of tropical fruit salad topped with marshmallow fluff and Grandma’s peaches and cream. Big flavors of passionfruit, fresh squeezed OJ, mango sorbet, and melted orange vanilla creamsicles transform into a luscious mouthfeel leading into a Big Bang of rainbow melon and our #EQjuice finish.
